What's on your mind?

Well, I'm wondering why Thursday's "house meeting" at NBHS is now a Friday afternoon "general staff meeting" in the auditorium. A Friday afternoon after-school meeting does wonders for everyone's morale. Could it be that something BIG is going down at the School Committee Thursday night?

Normandin is getting out of control again.

Will the negotiating team be able to make any difference in the lives of our teachers? STAND YOUR GROUND!

The negotiating team will stand their ground. Will teachers stand up and vocalize? I am not on the team but I know that people in my building want things to happen and aren't willing to publicly state their opinions. It is an unfair burden to place on the few brave enough to stand up for everyone.

Comical to watch Mayor's disinterest and boredom when Pia speaks. And, such B.S. she feeds them. They are so passive and seem quite satisfied w/ Pia at the wheel. Wonder how they would feel if it were happening to them? She sure is a Spitfire, and they have been buffaloed. Exemplar leadership and superficial stakeholders!

Everyone complains about Dr Durkin and that's ok but what about some of the lousy principals and administrators who wouldn't think twice about throwing any teacher under the bus to save their rear end. Speak up and stop being afraid. Our high school is a product of poor leadership. The admin team at NBHS might be nice people but nice people don't always make good leaders. The headmasters position used to carry a lot of weight and I hope it does again someday and whoever is the next headmaster needs to use it to stand up to PRAB, stand up FOR their teachers, stand up to bully parents and quite frankly have the stones to tell it like it is . The headmaster not only must have knowledge of academics but needs to know the pulse of the building with custodial, maintenance and food service as well. This is sorely lacking. The main office cannot acquiesce the placement of teachers to coordinators who are looking to get out of teaching class. When the computers in the cafeterias aren't working it should be addressed immediately not two or three weeks later. When a teacher breaks up a fight and gets punched in the process that teacher SHOULD NEVER be suspended for three days! There's my rant for the day. Teachers please do not only stand up to the mayor and superintendent but also to your building principals when you feel you are being wronged. If you can't speak for yourself no one else will!

Ive tried to post about Normandin, where I teach, but the posts aren't showing. I know other schools are experiencing problems, but I also think I should be able to post my two cents about my school.

I agree with the comment about NBHS and the lack of strong administrative leadership. You are also correct in stating how they throw their teachers under the bus to save their own skins. I also witnessed this at PRAB. To further facilitate her course of action, Pia continues to plant bugs in SC and Mayor's ear telling them that not only are teachers involved in a conspiracy, but Clerks, Secretaries, Paras, and Custodians are, as well. I believe that she is not only misinforming them, but looking for autonomy to can them, too. In my estimation, before they convene, Pia is prepped and comments and questions by all parties are scripted. Additionally, Lou is correct when he raises issues of the dismissal of our sub-groups. Since the district lacks the resources to truly support them, the next best thing is to set them up for failure so they drop out and go away. It makes a big difference in the data department, and the district shows strides in improvement. What a scam!

I do believe that teacher frustration is hitting a fever pitch, and for well deserved reasons. More teachers need to vent their frustrations on this blog so that stakeholders, administrators and politicians have an opportunity to read the concerns and views on present conditions, by the people in the trenches. Presently there is just not enough written feedback from teachers. There is plenty of mumbling though in the halls and lunch rooms. This blog needs to be the de-facto standard for teachers to be heard without fear of repercussion. Lou, I think it is critical to get that message out. I have spoken to teachers that are in fear of losing their jobs if they write to the blog, and that needs to be addressed. No teacher is going to come out and admit to writing on the blog. There are too many snitches waiting to pounce. Can you calm their fears, and get the word out that their words will remain anonymous? The problem for many to post could be that they're not sure of the website's confidentiality. I don't believe teachers are going to post to the superintendents hotline, so this blog is vital to keeping our voices heard, and getting important messages across to everyone that has a stake in the success of the district.

How can we teach this rigorous BS if we have chaos in the classroom?
Consequences are a fact of life! you commit a crime-you go to jail! Try holding the PARENTS and the children accountable for their actions and get rid of these puppet principals!

At Normandin kids are fighting and threatening teachers with no consequence. How can anyone demand rigor in an environment like that?

You cannot teach with chaos! Consequences are a fact of life, especially when these kids don't have any at home. I refuse to teach like this anymore! New Bedford is filled with amazing teachers and lack luster administration. Pia reminds me of mean, spiteful nun that beats her kids into submission. Horrible, horrible conditions.

Pia is awesome. Just ask...her.
