Is Mayor Jon Mitchell "covering up" for Dr. Durkin? ... Submitted by a member

I think we all need to remember something very important. If everything was being reported accurately, if everything was going well and the fear of violence was just over reaction on the part of teachers, then the mayor would have no reason to try and downplay and cover up the facts. Logic tells us that because he is avoiding questions, downplaying the truth and trying to redirect to place blame on people who are just trying to get the facts that he knows there is a problem, that he has something to hide and he is insulting the people of New Bedford by assuming they are not intelligent enough to question those facts that do not make sense. If everything was above board and going as well as he has implied then he would be open and willing to share facts and would be investigating any discrepancies, perceived or real. He knows there are problems and is just trying to cover up. People of New Bedford, please keep questioning until he discloses undisputable facts.

So true. If this was happening under Francis, he'd be all over her.

New Bedford's children are being hurt, good teachers are being threatened, the schools are falling apart, and the mayor it trying to distract the public , he is trying to make the horribly wrong decision to give Pia Durkin the power he has go unnoticed! Well it won't teachers will band together on Dec 13 th , voices will be heard and truth will be spoken.

Mitchell had numerous opportunities to intervene and he flat out rejected to invest in us. I will never understand his motives or why he allows this to continue. His incompetence is finally catching up to him.

The truth always prevails. He should save face and just say there is a problem with teacher assaults. When something really bad happens at the high school he's really going to fall hard. Then it will be too late for denial.

SO happy we opted OUT of public school for middle school this year. There are clearly MAJOR issues and the solutions seem to get buried deeper and deeper as each school day passes. How sad that a system I once held in admiration and esteem has become such a MESS!!! We are only 2 years away from high school and at this time New Bedford High is NOT an option. We will move from the city to avoid it if we have to. Sad, 46 years of living in New Bedford and its the school system that will drive me away.

Teachers in New Bedford are 93% proficient. We are as qualified as any other district in the state. What has been lacking is leadership.

So sad for the parent who felt they had to "opt out" of NB Public Middle School. I can say that, regardless of pain and chaos in the teaching profession, and the routine problems that happen in all schools, good things are still happening at Keith middle School.

I agree... out of all the city middle schools... Keith is doing great things despite the odds.
