We have much to accomplish together .... By Bill Lacey

The 2002 film, “Mr. Deeds”, a remake of the classic Gary Cooper, “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town”, climaxes with a scene, staged in a grand hotel ballroom, where the empire of Deeds’ uncle is to be broken up and sold at a profit for the shareholders. Adam Sandler, playing the protagonist Deeds, implores the shareholders to reconsider their actions citing,

“I’ll bet if we ran into the 5th grade versions of ourselves right now, they would kick our *sses and put Bubble Yum in our hair…”.

That line jumps out at me tonight as I return to my place as your Community Relations liaison.

What indeed would the Fifth Grade version of you say about your station in our New Bedford Public School Department?  Would they be pleased with your present situation? Would they sit down beside you and agree that you have no voice to determine your future?

Or would they kick your *ss, put Bubble Yum in your hair and tell you to get involved…

Our Family of Teachers convenes in private on the thirteenth of December.  Leave your complacency behind and make the Fifth Grade version of yourself proud.  We have much to accomplish together.
