Tell Jon Mitchell that Pia Durkin's reign of terror must end immediately....Submitted to the blog

Parents, teachers, and anyone that cares about children should call 1420 WBSM on Wednesdays from 5-6:00 p.m. and voice their concerns to the "education Mayor."

The children of this city are the ones that will suffer in the end. Tell Jon Mitchell that Pia Durkin's reign of terror must end immediately. If not, we will do everything in our power to fire him in two years.

We the voters are the ones in control here..Let's do something about it

I know not all that Pia is doing is correct, but she is trying to fix a system that for too long has been passive. There are a lot of teachers who come from the surrounding towns to teach in our city and there attitude is that these kids after all they are from New Bedford, they are not as special or have the financial means as those in the town. Well let me tell you our kids in New Bedford deserve better. They are not throw aways. Some teachers have to change their attitudes because not all people who live in New Bedford are on welfare. There are hard working families that send their children to school to get an excellent education, and ask yourself Lou are they ??? Why are there so many level 3 and 4 schools. It can't be all the children's faults . We need to look deep within ourselves and ask are we doing everything we can to educate these kids?? Let's stop putting all the blame on Pia . She was hired to do a job and unlike some of you out there she is doing what she was hired to do.

If we buy into these labels and levels--then yes--Pia is a data hugger. Where are these lazy teachers with negative attitudes about students? I haven't met one in over 20 years here. I have known administrators that ignore the challenges our students face each day. I know administrators that think students should have more test prep rather than more enriching subjects. We can't be punching bags any longer. Our students absolutely deserve an excellent education. Support the teachers in delivering that education. We are speaking out because we know the current climate has made a negative impact on learning in this district. Learning occurs best in a low stress environment, anxiety ridden/fearful teachers will not be effective. That is why we blame Pia. She has sent out attack dogs and now wants to pretend they act alone. Don't buy it.

Pia is barking up the wrong tree and so are you! There are so many examples. Students need to be held accountable. And they really could use some support from the two people who brought them into this world! Of course that is not always possible as these people do not have the means to even encourage their children for what ever reason, physical, emotional, intellectual. Some of these kids really need a HUG! I believe all teachers in this system are willing to support all of their students as much a they possibly can! The student has to meet you half way though. Ten years of this and it still stuns me how students can be absent so frequently and make no attempt to seek help after school to understand concepts which they have missed. That goes for quizzes and tests as well. I don't believe in letting students make up these assessments as this will not be their experience in college. But I give them the opportunity and they do not even take advantage of that. And the criminal behavior of having to keep unruly students in the classroom or even the school, as they interrupt the learning process of others. If only we could eliminate these disruptive students from the process as Voke can.. Every child deserves an education but not every one is ready for it. We can not shove it down there throats. We can get them by if they meet us half way, they can soar if they are willing to go beyond half way. If they are out a couple days a week or do no work, and aren't going to make the effort to catch up and stay current then they are not ready.. Not to say they won't be at some point, that is their call. Plenty of very caring teachers in this system that are ready when they are.

Interesting that last post used "attack dogs" and I said she was "barking up the wrong tree"... I was responding to the second post in this thread, not the 3rd.
