Michelle Hantman, President, United Way of Greater New Bedford supports what Dr. Durkin is doing to our students and educators

  • On December 11, 2013, Michelle Hantman, President, United Way of Greater New Bedford said, "We support and have confidence in Superintendent Durkin."
  • On December 16, 2013, Dr. Durkin  informed the public that she will replace at least 50% of the New Bedford High School Faculty.  Mayor Jon Mitchell and the entire School Committee blessed her decision.
  • Ms. Hantman has the right to her opinion.
  • We have the right not to give money to an organization does not support our students and educators.
  • We encourage our members and friends to do the same.

They will not get another penny from me.

I never gave to United Way as they take money off the top for administrative costs, but this certainly justifies a reason for those who have been. There are plenty of other great organizations out there who would be deserving of your money.

It is extremely unfortunate that many of these business and organization leaders willingly singed up to support Dr. Durkin without taking the time to research what the teacher's concerns are. The callous disregard of their actions and how it affects all of us who are in the classroom is inexcusable! It is time for each of us to take a close look at the list of Durkin supporters and withdraw, cancel or stop any further financial contributions and /or purchases which support these businesses and agencies until they publicly express support for the teachers of N.B. Please show the list of names which appeared in the ad in its entirety so that it can be reviewed over and over again so we do not forget.

I'll be canceling my United Way donation too. Anyone know how to get it removed from payroll deduction?

We will be stopping our donation.

I have been donating to the United Way with an automatic payroll deduction for over 20 years...I will no longer trust that they know better where my money should go to help. I am a teacher and a good citizen/helper. If they can't help the helpers....I'm DONE!

Please post the phone number to call and stop my donation through payroll. Thank you.

She's got some serious nerve after her organization has used this school district as a pipeline for donations to her organization for years.

Egregious. These people that think they are above it and need to be brought down a peg or two. I stopped giving to UW a long time ago, for the same reason some of you are not giving any longer. I give, but to the charities I want to support and who do the right things with my money. Find some other suckers UW. What an idiot.

Ms Hantman lives in Rochester. Her son will never attend New Bedford Public Schools, so who is she to "support" Durkin when she has no idea what goes on in the lives of teachers on a daily basis under a micromanager who is determined to ruin our school system and city? Walk a day in my shoes lady, and then you can make an informed, unbiased decision in who you want to support.

Tore up my donation pledge today before I left school. I'm done.

For years we've had to listen to United Way take up half of our staff meeting to show a video and talk us into donating on a weekly basis. I gladly supported the cause for years. Where is the support New Bedford teachers deserve? That extra money is worth more in my pocket now!

I will stop my donation, my husband will stop his donation and I have asked all family members to stop their donations. Instead, I have asked them to help out through our church. We support the local community but I would rather see my money go to organizations that support students and teachers.

Michelle Hantman is more interested in hanging out with Durkin at fundraisers at the Whaling Museum than supporting the people who have given to her organization for years. How long has Durkin been contributing to the United Way? Should have thought this one through a little more.

What a buffoon. You gotta get angry over this. If any time is allotted to this group during a staff meeting I will walk out, and that is a fact!

The New Bedford Schools need major overhauling. Work with the Superintendent to achieve positive outcomes for the children. It is more than ignorant to encourage your members to stop donating to the United Fund!

This is the cocktail crowd. Im surprised the advertisement didnt have a martini glass stain on it. I'm too busy working and raising my family in the city to go to cocktail parties where the out of towners and non profiteers solve the city's problems.

The New Bedford schools need overhauling you say. Send your check for at least 10,000.00 to nbhs and that will be a start..

I will gladly give up my donations to UW. Maybe we should start a fund and use the money to support the teachers who will be out of jobs. These families need money too. Much rather donate to an out of work teacher. In fact, I would increase my donation.

United Teachers Fund!

I LOVE IT! THE UNITED TEACHERS FUND.

Use our previously donated money (UW) can be put into a huge pool for the unemployed teachers. We are hard working individuals who are not living off the system. Instead, some of our co-workers will no longer afford the everyday essentials. I would gladly give to the UNITED TEACHERS FUND-SERVING THE HARD WORKING NBPS TEACHERS AND SUPPORT STAFF!

Wonder how much Durkin is contributing to United Way each week!

I stopped giving when I found out that they provided funding for lawyers who represented our students (and were not at all willing to work with us).
