Shouldn't teachers receive the same respect other public employees enjoy? ...Submitted to NBEA

It is interesting that the news media does not attack the police department for its poor performance - unsolved murders, robberies, assaults, shootings, etc. They should absolutely be called to task for this along with the mayor.

I think the public should evaluate the effectiveness of the police department and the mayor's poor job performance. And then they should be threatened with termination unless they come up with a "turn-around" plan to make New Bedford a safer place to live and work. Nobody's complaining about how much money is made working details and overtime. I'll bet not one police officer buys his own computer, paper, pens, or weapons. They also get a clothing allowance. What do teachers get?

Seems that teachers deserve nothing but abuse and denial of the rights that all other public employees enjoy.

Time for teachers to band together in NB and not show up for work. Let's see how important we are then. Police, fire and other workers have done this before. Bold measures need to be taken or they will continue to treat us like garbage.

When will the public hold the local charities and religious organizations to task. There are lots of people in this city living in desperation so apparently they haven't been successful in their efforts to provide support and a leg up out of poverty.

No, I will show up for work because the kids deserve a teacher. I know the police do that but I will not. not because I do not believe in the union movement but because children are not pawns. My child attends an elementary school, I have a long road with this system. I am however looking to move out of the city. They are unethical, I am not. I am a teacher. I lead by example. But I will most certainly be there for the walk at city hall! Count on it.

Today I closed out bank accounts at First Fed and BayCoast. There was not a lot of money involved, but I made the point. The tellers and branch managers I spoke to did not seem to be aware of the reasons why I was upset with their banks. If you choose to remove your funds as well, make sure you are vocal as to why you are making the move. I also mentioned to the receiving bank why I had moved my money. They at least appeared interested.
Just a note to the posters who are upset with the police department, you have a valid point that the police are no more responsible for crime than teachers are for students’ lack of effort, but let’s not start a war with other city unions. We should all stick together.

I agree that unions should stick together, but Police and Fire have been silent and/or downright unsupportive to the NBEA. As long as they have their new toys and the promise of overtime, they seem OK with how the teachers are being abused. When they speak up for us, I will stop pointing at their sefishness.

Nice post above. Thanks for closing those accounts! We need to all do our part in that regard.

Why try to deflect by complaining about other jobs? Why sit around and complain about lack of respect? These approaches will not get us anywhere. Pick a real target/issue and go after it. That's the only way to succeed.

Great point on post above! Not many other unions in New Bedford support the NBEA. We need to start waking up! Can't think of any union or organization in this city that has had our backs! We need to seek the support of these other unions and maybe we can start to have some positive changes in the schools here. Hopefully the rally on the 17th will bring out others to support us!

To the teacher who is not comfortable calling out sick, please remember they are using and abusing us, and we are just taking a stand in order to continue to be their teachers. If you attended or watched SC meetings, you'd know that this is an area of contention for the mayor. You have to hit them where it hurts. They DO NOT care about us. Plus, if you've been slipped (fired), you lose all the sick days you have accrued. It is wise to use them now. If you're sick-at-heart, the students will sense this. Stay home and get strong. This battle is still raging on. We must send out this powerful message that we are not door mats!

Unfortunately the cards have been dealt, it is now how the cards are played. The city and its leadership is so deep in the debacle that there is no turning back. Saving face verses waiting e out the memory of the mess is the battle cry. I've found people to very forgiving.

What a pity.

There is little left than to not seek reelection or say that home is calling. This is the superintendent last stand, and for good or bad she will go down with the ship until the point where she will evaluate what she believes is the demise of a stoic and good reputation, or complete utter failure. A sad tale of a city

Please don't give up.

It is hard not to give up when no progress is seen. As a second career professional, I have never seen such abuse. It is not something I want to tolerate for much longer. Life is way too short. I know I bring a great deal to the table to my students. My education and life experiences I feel are very valuable. This superintendent, mayor and school committee do not seem like they have the slightest concern for Teachers. I am fairly new to this profession and I have the utmost respect for those that have taught for years as a career choice. You are to be commended. I can walk away, but most of you cannot. I hope and pray that things improve. The New Bedford Teachers are the most dedicated, finest group of people I have had the privilege to work with. I have worked in several school districts and your professionalism is unmatched. I am proud to be included among you. I just hope I can keep hanging on.

Totally agree.

Didn't Mayor Mitchell constantly state when he was running for office in 2011 that "he was going to be tough on crime and that the criminals wouldn't want him in the corner office"? Well, I don't see that happening! Perhaps Mayor Mitchell should fire Chief Provencher, all the police officers, and rehire half of them back along with new recruits. Good enough for the teachers, good enough for the police department.

Wonder if crime will disappear or escalate?
