A letter to Mayor Mitchell ... Submitted by a NBPS Educator

Dear Mayor Mitchell,

Your dad was my eighth grade teacher. He was a knowledgeable, engaging educator as well as tremendous historian. In fact, he was an inspiration for my becoming a teacher. I can't help but wonder how difficult it would be for him to impart his wisdom if he were working in the conditions that presently exist at NBHS.

I implore you to walk in his shoes by substitute teaching for one week at the High School. If nothing else, it will give you an understanding of how hard your parents worked to educate the children of the Greater NB Community as well as the sacrifices they made for your higher education. This is an extention of the olive branch and an opportunity for you to directly interact and affect change at the ground level. You were most certainly correct when you stated "problems tend to worsen when not confronted". You have both the power and authority to directly confront them. Please seriously consider taking this most important first step in bridging the gap between administration and teaching staff.

Respectfully,

An NBPS Educator

I don't think Mitchell has what it takes to be a teacher.

It's not the union we are concerned about! It's the administration at PRAB and our individual school leadership!

We know that the teachers let go last year count toward the 50%. If 50% of 170 teachers is 85 minus the 30 from last year is 55 PEOPLE! Actually I can add and subtract! You, Mr Mayor need to know the number. This is our lives you are invalidating! If you get it you'd understand. How would you like to have a 14 year old tell you that you're fired so they don't need to do anything.

How is the turnaround model a federal grant? The Superintendent has said that all grants are competitive. We have no guarantees on this money.
New Bedford High School is in business and will remain in business no matter what you and the cronies try to do! We need alternative schools for those who do not believe that being part of an educational institution and performing at their best is something they should do. NBHS is not a jungle behave yourselves, do what is asked and be successful at school!
Adam is a remarkable young man and yes he has been accepted at Brown due to his interest in his education and those teachers that have helped him pave his way. I am personally proud of that young man!
Thank you to the woman who spoke about underperforming students and families. I wish many more people had your insight! Your grandkids learned because of what was first taught at home!
Hey Phil, a student that doesn't pass the MCAS doesn't get a diploma! The teachers of the UNION want to work and have been working under tremendous change for many years. You can't arrest a student that isn't breaking the law. What law will they be arrested for breaking. Levels had to go because OCR (Office for Civil Rights) found that kids were being tracked and discriminated against. A level 5 student was one of the best and brightest. A level 1 student was a problem. We now have AP, Pre-AP, Honors and College levels. The kids can go into any level they and their parents choose no matter what their success rate in school. I just can't listen anymore!!!!!!!!!
