From what I can see, he's only tough on teachers ... Submitted to NBEA

Mayor Jon Mitchell promised to be tough on crime but hasn't said word about it since he became mayor. Killings, robberies, and assaults are now common place in New Bedford.

I couldn't agree more!

Not even our schools are safe any more.

I agree. Proclaiming education as our only hope for New Bedford while defaming its educators seems whack to me.

I think he should step down and let someone who has the brains and brawn to bring New Bedford back from the dark side! HE SHOULD BE FIRED FOR NOT DOING HIS JOB!

I agree. I thought he (Mitchell) was going to be tough on crime, RIGHT! Read on New Bedford Guide about a police officer being shot; then we had the bank robbery, the murders, and don't forget about all the assaults. All this in the month of January!

With all this crime, what company will want to set up business here? New Bedford is NOT a safe city.

Our mayor forgets that we (teacher) are dealing and dealt with these individuals who are committing all these crime.

High drop-out rates and economic hardship will increase the crime rate.

The drop-outs that committed the recent crime were not from New Bedford.

I do agree with you regarding the crime rate in NB....why hasnt the Standard Times address that issue and the politics with the city. Bring it up to the city councilman at their rally. Let them work on that. What has the mayor done other than ignore the crime rate in the city. Let's see him address that and who will he blame for that....It is always someone elses fault(problem) with him!

Maybe Unger will acknowledge the crime problem when blood flows in the streets.

Thanks Mayor Mitchell, you're doing a great job being tough on teachers. Do you think you could do something about the crime in NB?

Fighting crime is hard, it's really, really hard. We have to take those criminals out of their comfort zone. Send Pia!

Jon doesn't have the time to deal with the issue of crime. He's busy worring about street lights and firing teachers. He sure has priorities in order.

Police officer shot! Where is our mayor, mister tough on crime? Unsafe neighborhoods, two murders this year, bank robbery, assaults, break-ins, drugs, robberies, prostitution, car-jacking, etc. Has he reduced crime by 40 to 50%?

Mr. Mayor start focusing on making our city a safe place in which to live and do business.

Just a reminder, the car-jacking that occurred on Taber and Page streets was committed by a person who went to NBHS. The victim recognized the person (carjacker) from her high school year book when she looked through the her book.

I get it. The FFP isn't doing his job regarding the rampant crime in New Bedford. Maybe so. That's a fair criticism. But our more serious problem is more and more of the crimes committed are not by people from New Bedford. Upon hearing the names of the Davis st shootings my first thought was out of towners and I was right. The section 8 mobility is killing New Bedford and it's trickling down to the school system in a bog way.

Scott Lang articulated a clear, independent position at the NBEA rally. He did not offer a total endorsement of the NBEA position on all matters but he did structure a careful argument against current education reform approaches. He was very clear that vilifying teachers was taking place and was counter productive.

This week, commenting on Dr Durkin's plans for New Bedford High school, the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch has endorsed exactly what Scott Lang has said.

Despite these clear arguments and authoritative voices, the editor of the Standard Times has written that Scott Lang is not being "helpful" by commenting on education in New Bedford.

Will the Times allow any other voices to discuss education in New Bedford?

What difference does it make where the criminals come from? They are committing their crimes here in New Bedford! I guess it's easier for the mayor to "get tough" on law-abiding teachers rather than on law-breaking thugs. He claims the problem lies with absentee landlords - why not "get tough" on them? He is just plain useless.

He should be fired! He is not doing his job, Mitchell is a huge wimp! Let someone else deal with the thugs, someone who is not afraid of his own shadow!
