Dear Lou and our colleagues in the NewBedford Educators Association,
Once again teachers are being required to educate the public but, even more so, our "education" leaders about the value of our teachers and how they are part of the solution, not the problem. It is incomprehensible to anyone who works in the schools how the wholesale slaughter being proposed by your superintendent of schools can benefit your students or the New Bedford community.
Unfortunately, the aresponsiblility lies not only with your superintendent but with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the short sighted regulations that give a superintendent the power to implement such draconian steps.
Although New Bedford teachers are on the forefront in this battle for reasonableness and professional sound practice, you are actually fighting for all of us. Although we all can't be with you physically, know our 550 members are with you in spirit and insolidarity.
Let us hope that reason prevails.

Thank you for your understanding and support!
Pia Durkin is a bureaucrat following a script that will yield a short term financial savings in exchange for a long term reduction in quality of education. This plan isn't meant to help the students.
Refer to Elephant Economics 101.
What ever happened to the human factor. We are not dealing with numbers, we are dealing with the future of our children!!
