A message from Dr. Durkin regarding the packets that were distributed on Friday

It was made known to me that the process for distributing the reapplication materials to the HS teachers did not take place as I directed on Friday.  The materials were meant to be either picked up at the HS Headmaster's Office or handed to the teachers by the Housemasters.  Both instances should have resulted in the teacher signing for the envelope. The envelopes never should have been distributed by students and, even though it was a small number of students who were assigned to do this, it  is still inappropriate and I can understand the teachers' concerns and distress.  Tomorrow morning (Monday 2/10)  the Headmaster will be forwarding to the staff an apology as well as notification that the deadline for completing the materials has been extended from this coming Friday (2/14) to the Monday after the February break (2/24).  I had heard from several staff members that they preferred more time given the other activities taking place at the HS.

so she is throwing the staff at the high school under the bus for this?

Again, were the directions for distribution in writing or were they verbal? Big difference in the two. Again, they should have been certified U.S. mail return receipt requested. But, that would have cost money and the district can't afford it. Oh and by the way, the district has no bulk mail status with the U.S. postal service too!

The damage has already been done Supt. Durkin. Upsetting faculty and students during class time is beyond comprehension. Great management and leadership skills.

Those letters definitely should have been sent certified U.S. mail return receipt requested. That would have been the proper thing to do. You just don't get it Mrs. Durkin. You act like you know everything but it is very obvious that even with a Phd you are very much lacking in your social skills.

Do applicants outside of the district have to fill out "packets of evidence" as well???

Ultimately it is Dr. Durkin who is responsible for terminating teachers but sadly does not have the cojones to deliver the bad news in person. In that respect she is neither a professional nor a decent human being. Regardless of the directive that may or may not have been received by administrators at NBHS, Dr. Durkin needs to own up to her mistakes. It is she who owes NBHS staff a letter of apology. ALL OF NBHS staff should be present at the vigil this evening ....to send her a message of solidarity. The time for inaction and indifference is LONG gone ... Be there for each other ... Give each other the respect Durkin continuously fails to give you!!!

Good news! You can use your vacation for this packet to be completed. Nice to see the Durkinator can change her deadlines when another BIG error has occurred(and she is embarrassed).

What I read here from the superintendent is an explanation but nowhere did I read an apology, even on behalf of her HS administrators. Not the slightest hint of compassion, just business. What happened to the "Top Dog" taking responsibility. What happened to " the buck stops here". I know a conservative talk show who preaches about that all the time.
I don't think Pia is about to apologize to anyone. That would be beneath her.

Always putting things on other people. Wow..this woman is a great leader!!!!

I am literally physically sick from the stress all this is causing. I have spent the better part of my adult life in the New Bedford Public School system. I haven't got enough books. I haven't got enough supplies they keep piling more kids into my room. I have spent hundreds of dollars supplying my classroom on a yearly basis for many years. Kids are double scheduled. Kids are not in the right rooms. Nobody takes responsibility for anything. Simple clerical errors take me hours to rectify when it should have been done at the point of entry. everyone passes everything off to the next guy. Does anybody care?

Not sure why Durkin should have delivered them. The city doesn't pay her 160k a year to deliver mail. The instructions were sent, the high school is obviously trying to stir the pot, and it worked like a charm.

OMG!!! Stop the presses! Will the S-T put this on the front page???

So Durkin you gave the directive and it was not followed? Is that your story? Gee, If a teacher gives students a directive and it is not followed, the teacher is blamed. You know, did not have clear expectations. Yet, you gave an educated adult directions and you are sticking to your story that this person could not carry it out correctly? Well, well, well. I do believe it is YOUR fault because you obviously did not provide adequate instruction to your lowly headmaster. Now you are making the headmaster the scapegoat as you cover your own tail. Stay classy, Durkin. Stay, classy :)

Just because you have a PhDs doesn't guarantee that you are smart bright or the most important...common sense.

To the person who said Durkin isn't paid 160k to deliver mail.....what the hell is she being paid that much for? To stir her own pot of stupid. Whoever you are get a clue.

I believe Supt. Durkin's salary is $180,000. Those packets should have been sent to us via the USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt.

Perhaps we should ALL hand in our papers to Pia, not her secretary, and have her sign and date our copies of all documents. Remember, our classes were interrupted during the middle of RIGOROUS instruction so we should also be able to interrupt her during whatever she is working on.

You are all extremely rude to each other. Since when do you, as professionals not respect each others opinion? Not that any of your opinions are justified with proof or logic, but at least try!

^ Don't take this bait...some would like nothing more than to discredit teachers by baiting them to show antagonism toward a student.

That child is being coached I think..he will understand more when he is older.

The guilt will get to him."........................

Fire Dr Durkin! Sick of apologies. Apologizing don't mean anything when you are constantly responsible for mistakes. Get someone who knows what the hell they're doing and cares about the well being of our children and their teachers instead of politics and $$$ !!!!

So now she is throwing the headmasters under the bus.

her less than attractive guidance, has yielded a negative spot light on New Bedford and our high school across the region, Dr. Durkin needs to go!!

A day late and a dollar shot. POOR LEADERSHIP ON DURKIN'S PART.

With her at the helm, the entire district will soon become a Level 5 but she'll retire with a pension of approximately $144,000.
