Does the Standard Times really dislike New Bedford teachers and their union leader that much? ... By Terry Mozaz

I could not believe the disrespect shown in "Our View" toward teachers (Standard-Times, Feb. 12). Do you really dislike New Bedford teachers and their union leader that much?

"Easy as pie" and "they ought to be running out of there begging to work somewhere 'safe,'" you say! Are you daring teachers?

You are right in stating that showing an old video to demonstrate the behavior teachers have to put up with in New Bedford High School was dramatic (though, if true, I would hope we are not condoning its happening this year or last year), but you are callous in accepting sporadic violent incidents as not such a dramatic thing. And whether it is 50 percent or 29 percent of teachers being fired should not be the point of the teachers' outrage. It should be that they are being blamed for something beyond their control.

I have read that the Parker School got extra funds to establish necessary improvements, and I imagine extra funds will also be necessary at NBHS to achieve the "turn-around" plan and enable changes needed to improve students performance. And my question is, if additional resources are needed for this turn-around, why weren't the funds made available before? This is not something teachers have control over!

Perhaps, if we are honest with ourselves, we will recognize that special supports are needed to help our students' demographics all the time, not just when we have a crisis in our hands due to systematic short-changing our schools.
