These three have gone 4 years w/o witnessing a fight? All high schools have fights...you can see a fight just driving by a high school at dismissal time.

What some kids won't do for a couple minutes fame, I wouldn't be proud if I were their mom in fact I'd be ashamed and would feel like a failure as a parent.

If I believe that those three students never saw one fight in four years, then it must be true that pigs can fly!!!

My oldest daughter graduated from NBHS and she would come home frightened almost everyday because of the fights she witnessed, or just afraid of looking at the wrong person and get bullied. That was the only, but difficult, reason I chose not to send my younger daughter there but instead to VOC. Loved the teachers at NBHS but could not bear the idea of sending another child into an atmosphere of fear!

These three must have been absent a lot or in the bathroom.

These students didn't just show up at the radio station. One of our fellow parents who's all of a sudden is sucking up to Mayor Mitchell organized this publicity to distract the public from the truth.

When someone gets seriously hurt, all those in denial will accuse the school of ignoring the warning signs that could have prevented the "tragedy".

Marlene Pollock will be the first to say that we "failed" the children.

I thought most of the bathrooms stay locked? Also, there's one house completely shut down. Shouldn't things be EASIER to control now with the tiniest population ever and less space? Oh, I know what the problem is! Skeleton crew for a staff--and only 3 SROs...Guess what makes a school safe and effective? PEOPLE that get paid to keep it safe and effective--unionized people--PEOPLE that truly care about NBHS. Remember the reason our high school will soon be unrecognizable--leaders that only care about test scores, fake data, and faux reputations as educational reformers.

Anonymous said...

Yes, one house is shut down, which means that it is now severely understaffed with only a few teachers stationed there--in classrooms--and no administrators. But the house is by no means closed off and anyone is free to walk through. Where would you go as a student if you wanted to cause trouble? Hmmmm........

Anonymous said...

I guess we can just cut the SRO positions because there are no fights at NBHS.

Anonymous said...

The fact is that one end of the building is like a quarter of a mile from the other . Teachers do not always know when there is a fight, never mind students.

Anonymous said...

Wait Eldric said he never saw a fight? Funny because there was one in the AP class he was in and I should know, I was the teacher

Anonymous said...

Just proves the administration has wbsm in their pockets! Why didn't durkin respond to channel 6 and go on fun 107 if she didn't know they had her back!!!!

Anonymous said...

What should happen is simple. Make the Superintendent go to the high school for two weeks and not leave the building. Let the superintendent physically see for herself. Keep up the good work NB teachers. Don't let some malcontent super or even mayor run you guys.

Anonymous said...

I don't think people realize the extent of what is going on at NBHS. Yes it happens at other schools, channel 10 did a story a month ago about one teacher who was hurt breaking up a fight at another school and it was deemed unacceptable behavior by the students. I saw one teacher being beaten by students, I got him help but not before he was beaten. I've seen my colleagues taken out in ambulances or taking days out to recover from a beating they received while breaking up a fight only to be chastised for acting rashly by stepping in to try and stop the students from hurting each other further. I for one am hoping that by seeing it the community will be even more supportive and demand that these problems be addressed immediately.

Are we really silencing students ? Is that what this has come to ?

Anonymous said...

Who called for silencing students? We want more more more! Variety of experiences welcomed.

Anonymous said...

I find it very had to believe these students saw nothing. It would be interesting to know if these students have relationships with one another. Students should not be allowed to involve themselves in these discussions without parent representation.

Anonymous said...

As you can see, Pia will do anything and use anyone she has to, to serve her sick cause. Willing to bet she recruited these kids to say they've never witnessed fights.

Anonymous said...

Haha

Impressive students break their silence to speak their minds and Someone dismisses thier words because pia Durkin controls them ?

I'm starting to feel like some teachers should move on.

Anonymous said...

I had one of these three students in class; and, yes, he would do anything for his 15 minutes of fame! Don't believe a word of what he says for a second. He constantly needs "attention." I'd don't believe in "moving on," especially when the truth needs to be told!

Anonymous said...

I graduated from NBHS in 1987 and I can tell you over the years I was there, I witnessed many fights. I find it very hard to believe that none of these kids witnessed a fight. I find that very hard to believe.

Anonymous said...

Josh Amaral. I thought I liked you more than I actually do. You said in a comment that you think there were a few fights when you went there but not what channel 6 depicted. Are you forgetting that you attended when you actually had a strong administration? You are not at NBHS now and the problem is the way discipline is being handed out now. Go under cover and see what you find.

Anonymous said...

Josh go to the high school and follow a students day and not a AP students day ,go under cover, bet by 1p.m. You'll be harrassed,if you are put in with the trouble makers.
Or better yet sub for the classes that have the problems or get duty where the wolfs roam!

Anonymous said...

I don't believe them at all, have they been living under a rock or do they just want to see their name in print.

Anonymous said...

first thing this morning I approached one of the boys and ask him why he lied on the radio. His response was that he didn't really lie, miss, he just didn't tell them the whole truth and any way, any time he has seen a fight in 4 years he's looked in the other direction. I was so angry when I heard them on the radio I almost actually called in but thought better of it. they were lying through their teeth and they know it. What the hell are we teaching these kids?

Anonymous said...

Clearly a teacher like yourself who is blogging poorly about your students should not be a teacher at New Bedford High School, you come across as ignorant and I pity you.

Anonymous said...

I'm ashamed in your decision to post about one of your children. If you're going to blog about them, please take responsibility and stop hiding behind an anonymous screen name.

I think it's so sad that teachers are attacking these students for trying to stand up for their school. They said they never saw a fight. It doesn't mean that they didn't happen. Those students were being deliberately ambiguous because they wanted to talk about the positive, unlike the teachers on ABC6 who outright lied. Those individuals do not speak for me or many of my colleagues. I do not fear walking into my job every day and I do not spend more time breaking up fights than I do teaching. Those are deliberate lies, but I don't see any criticisms about that on here. My daughter would not be a student here and I would not work here if NBHS was actually how those 2 teachers depicted it. I don't know why anyone would stay at a job like that and if that is your perspective then you should do both sides a favor and leave. I have taught all levels and still do in my 7 years here. I have not witnessed or broken up a fight this year. I had heard of them happening but actually am not aware that any have happened since before Christmas. My guess is probably because about a dozen kids were expelled. Those claims on ABC6 were downright sensational and do NOTHING to help the situation at the high school. These students disprove the perception that NBHS students don't care. I think they are also very brave by putting themselves out there and not hiding behind the anonymity and semblance of fear that so many teachers do. I have known 2 of those students since their freshmen years and they are great kids that really turned it around for themselves. I am very proud of them.
People that throw out all the negativity need to truly think about what they say and how it hurts the over 2000 students at NBHS when you make ignorant blanket statements about the high school. The majority of the kids there are awesome young people and those that say otherwise need to find a new city to work or live in then.

Ms. Costa:

Your two little proteges are nothing more than publicity-seeking, self-serving prevaricators. You and the outspoken parent should be ashamed of yourselves for using students at NBHS for your own agendas. We know that the parent has political goals. You, on the other hand, are kissing rump to save your position.

Anonymous said...

Or maybe she is being honest and very couragess for speaking up vas defending her students .

Thank you MsCosta

MsCosta said...

First off, thank you to the propagandists and anonymous slanderers for showing the public what selfish idiotic asses you are. I couldn’t have illustrated it better myself. You are laughable and if you are a teacher, then you shouldn’t be. If you are a teacher at the high school, then I definitely hope you don’t keep your job because you are clearly part of the problem with this district. You are a joke, albeit an anonymous one. I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t want to take credit for being you either.
Second, I don't kiss anyone's ass (ask anyone that knows me). I don’t need to. I do my job and I do it quite well actually. It’s called working hard. Maybe you should try doing the same instead of bitching about it and the kids you serve. I came to work for this district for the children, not the teachers. You are clearly here for yourself. So maybe it’s time to find a new profession. I support hard working teachers like myself that are here for the kids. I do not respect cowards and liars. Your claims have absolutely no validity considering you won’t even sign your name to it. You are just another of the discontented that has forgotten why you went into teaching in the first place; or maybe you never knew. Maybe you don’t like children. You clearly have an issue with those 3 seniors that spoke up for their peers. Maybe you are just lazy and would rather point the finger of blame rather than try and help a kid that’s got some problems. I don’t know and frankly don’t care. You are just another one of those toxic jackasses that does more bitching about their job than actually doing it. You call people names from afar instead of manning up and truly standing up for what you believe in. I guess that means you’re either afraid of me or of what I represent. Poor you.

Go Ms. Costa.
Committed teachers like her--the one's who don't show up to collect their check and then subsequently check-out--will be what saves the high school. Most of the teachers at NBHS are like her. However, do not defend those who have directly contributed to the academic apathy in that building. Leave her, the kids, and the school alone in this regard.

We all know this was the Union and its henchmen (a few different community "activists") that shopped this story around. Hey Lou, what happened to you going up to the mic each month defending the school saying that it was always a happy place where nothing ever went wrong?

Oh yeah, a Superintendent came along that actually held this group accountable for its deficiencies.

Shame. Political moves (albeit poor ones at that) in lieu of actually constructive work for the Union.

Ms. Costa may very well be an outstanding teacher-however-her post seems to reveal an ego problem or a defensive attitude. I see only ONE post here speaking about her. Somehow she needed such a rambling post?

Anonymous said...

Ma'am/Sir, that one post speaking about Ms. Costa was probably an opinion shared by others, and Ms. Costa's comment was not directed at that one person, but all teachers who have the same mentality: ignorant, one-sided, fallacious, and selfish.

MsCosta said...

Yeah I have a huge ego. Just ask around. That's why I work in public school...because of my enormous ego. Yes, I am defensive. I get very defensive when people attack my school and my students. I actually get viciously pissed off. It's something I'm working on. I am trying to develop more patience for stupidity and ignorance. I have to admit it's not going so well. So I'm going to go back to not reading this blog since stupidity and ignorance is the majority of what I encounter here. Have fun with all of your own rants and ramblings and making the teachers of New Bedford look like self serving insensitive jerks. I'm going to go back to focusing on my work and the students. Peace.

The reason some students, like myself, don't see fights throughout our four years at NBHS...is because we go to our classes and don't hang out with people that exhibit that type of behavior. If you're doing what you're suppose to be doing and going to where you're suppose to be going then you'll be fine. NBHS is not as dangerous as that ABC 6 segment painted it to be. And all of you outsiders, who anonymously post comments don't know at all what you're talking about. You are only adding to false propaganda. So do not call these three students liars or say this is just a publicity stunt.

I find her distaste for other teachers disturbing. We all should. In such difficult times we should be more understanding of the struggle-even when we enjoy our own personal triumphs during those times.

Anonymous said...

I find her honesty reassuring and honest

Anonymous said...

Yes, honesty is honest. Sage.

Anonymous said...

The point of the matter is still that they say they never saw a fight....which is still unbelievable to most people.

Sorry to say but the high school is full of students who have no regard for teachers and their peers..

Get you head out of the sand, this has escalated over time and is prevalent throughout the system

Anonymous said...

Celeste I think you hit the nail on the head when you said a dozen had been expelled that's twelve trouble makers gone, the worst ones,

Anonymous said...

We all know why they were finally expelled---EXPOSURE of situation by our union actions. Thank you again Lou!
