The police reports speak for themselves ... Submitted to NBEA

The police incident reports verify the fights that took and are taking place at the high school. I would be willing to bet that these students heard about the various fights. They might not have witnessed them, but they certainly heard of them.

Are these students insinuating that the police, faculty, and staff are making these fights up? When people have been injured, ended up in the hospital, and are out on sick leave as a result of being injured that clearly makes a statement.

Durkin, Mitchell, and School Committee do you job of ending this violent behavior throughout the DISTRICT! Go into these schools and spend a day there, no excuses. Try it yourselves, that includes you Mayor Mitchell. The city will survive just fine for a day without you in the corner office just as it did when you were in Ireland, Washington, etc. You claim that you were going to be the "Education Mayor" now is your time to shine by spending time in the schools.

She also stated "that some incidents stemmed from teachers struggling with classroom management and said that professional development would be offered."- Standard Times

12/11/2013: Police Chief David Provencher said that he had not read the police reports.  In any case,30 incidents over 3 months does not represent a new or serious problem, he said. "To me it doesn't sound out of the ordinary," he said.  "If there were this uptick, a dramatic increase in incidents, the SRO supervisor would bring that to us, saying there's a problem here. That hasn't happened. In fact, quite the opposite. There is no type of increase."- Standard Times

12/11/2013: NBEA responds - There were 13 "incidents" in S.Y. 2011- 2012 and 23 incidents all of last year. According Police Chief David Provencher there were 30 incidents in just the first 3 months of this school year. How is that not an increase?

ive heard on the radio and seen written multiple times on this blog asking the mayor to sub for a day or even visit the school and talk to the staff.
has anyone seen the mayor or anyone from the school committee come to any school this year to talk to a teacher or ask how they are doing?

I've begged and when I see them on Monday I'll give them my personal invitation!

I used to see Mayor Lang frequently in various elementary schools. I cannot say I have ever seen mayor Mitchell in any of the schools despite a personal invitation ... This begs the question "is he afraid of teaching in his own system?" I certainly hope not ... However, if in fact he is, then it is high time to directly address this very sensitive subject... Perhaps the next school committee meeting would be yet another opportunity to directly invite him and every SC member to take a first hand look at schools in their care.

I've been getting a couple really good questions from concerned and rightfully confused parents. They have asked why teachers aren't filing police reports if students are assaulting them. Then answer is most of the teachers definitely are filing police reports and pressing charges. I was already told that I will be called as a witness to the beating of a colleague that I witnessed and many other teachers are awaiting their day in court. A second question I have been asked is why I allow my daughter to go to NBHS when it is so riddled with violence. The answer is easy. My daughter, only a freshman has witnessed three fights. She however does not know any of the kids involved and got away from those fights as quickly as she possibly could. She was not injured, nor were her friends. The truth is that if students go to NBHS for the purpose of getting the best education they can then they will be fine and my daughter loves her classes and the challenges her classes are giving her. However there is an element, and in my opinion, due to the lack of consequences this element is growing, that go to NBHS to disrupt class, harass teachers and students and to fight and cause as much trouble within their own crowd as they possibly can. Those students fight amongst themselves, they cause disruptions in their own classrooms and with the lack of real consequences from home or school can ruin it for the rest of the students. These are the students who are intent upon beating teachers who try to stop them from really hurting the student they are really trying to beat on and they do need to be removed from the school and retrained on the subject of classroom behavior. So the teachers are faced with a choice, they can either walk away from a fight, find a classroom phone, call for help, wait the 3+ minutes for help to arrive or they can step in, try and stop the kids from ending up hospitalized, and accept the ridicule and consequences from authority figures for trying to ensure that the students do not do extreme physical harm to each other. And just so parents know, teachers are still choosing to break up fights, risking their own health, knowing there will be consequences, rather than allowing students to really hurt one another while waiting for help to arrive and if you think about it, some severe damage can be done in 3+ minutes. NBHS is huge, SRO's and administrators can't always be in the right place at the right time and it takes time to make the call to the secretary, for the secretary to answer, for her to use the walkie talkie to get help and then for help to come from wherever they are working to where the fight is occurring. That is why some teachers can not just turn away and wait for help and not allow students to beat each other to a pulp, some of the teachers just can't stand by and watch this occur while waiting for help. I have also been asked if I am afraid of the students at NBHS. My answer is no, I love my students. However, the students I witnessed beating my colleague, I am and will remain completely terrified of them and any other student in that school intent on committing violence to the staff. Hope this clears up any confusion.

The police reports speak for themselves.

How can Durkin state that teachers injured while breaking up a fight is not an assault. Bet she'd be saying something else if she got hurt. If a police officer gets injured trying to subdue a person, the individual gets charged with an assault on a police officer. Guess in her warped mind teachers don't count.
