Thank you Lou for all of your unyielding persistence in the fight for our lives in this circus of absurdity we have all fallen into. I'm hoping in the end that only good things come the way of New Bedford Public Schools. I fear that this will not occur until the present political members of this farce are removed from the picture. This will only happen when the people of this city use their collective voice and remove each and every one of those people who are holding our district back from its former self. It will take time; most great endeavors do. We need to remain patient as this plays out.
Members of this union, Lou can't do it alone. We need to step up and do whatever is necessary to protect our schools. It means showing up at school committee meetings, rallies, candlelight vigils, and making our presence felt throughout the whole year. It means when November comes support candidates that support our children and not their own political agendas. It means making the citizens of this city aware of those people who have been holding this city hostage for their own need for power and control. This should start with the forthcoming governor's race. Study your candidates and find the one who stands with us. Support them and get them elected.
As for myself, I will most likely be one of those who not survive the bloodletting that is coming soon to the high school. I pledge that I will do as much as I can do to go down fighting. I will support you all, even after I am gone, and continue to spread the word of what we have been dealing with here in New Bedford for far too long now.

Remember, we are the Union, Lou is just our voice, we are it's heart and soul.

I'd like to say that as a student at New Bedford High School, i believe that the school was ill-portrayed in the abc6 news report. Obviously there is a problem, and one fight even is too many, however where were all of you when this was an even bigger problem, one or two years ago? I can testify that Dr. Durkin's methods are working and the high school is becoming increasingly safer, not that it was ever a problem to the horrifying degree which it was portrayed on television. I believe that since New Bedford High School has been designated a level four school, everyone is being awakened to problems that were always there. If people had done their jobs in the past, to keep the school at the level it once was, we would not be in this position. Dr. Durkin has a lot of cleaning up to do and she needs the full support of the school system to do so. In response to the comment above which states "Lou is just our voice" I have spoken with many teachers, who are horrified at the negativity the inaccurate report from abc6. Would you say that he is representing the teachers, who are in the union, that feel this way? No, he is voicing his own opinion, and a few of the teachers just happen to agree. Believe me when I say, that from a students perspective you all look totally biased and one-sided. Look at it from the superintendent's perspective, look at it from the other union member's perspective, look at it from the student's perspective, and not just the one's who actually cause the trouble in the school. You must remember that this is for the children, and this is what's best for the children. Every successful business makes cuts. Every successful sports team makes cuts. Every successful team (which is essentially what we are, playing the game of education) makes cuts. Some teachers are simply not up to the standard that we need to be, therefore it is the only option to cut them, and make way for new able teachers, since we only have three years to do this. Instead of focusing on all of this drama, why aren't we all focused on doing our jobs? Mine is to learn, yours is to teach. Anyone who has been doing their job well, should not feel threatened by this turnaround plan. It's called the TURNAROUND plan for a reason. She is our superintendent for a reason. If you all put an ounce of faith in this plan, and cooperate, I guarantee great improvement will be shown at the high school. Not only in test scores, but also in environment (which we are clearly lacking a positive one: these blog comments are example 1), student productivity and motivation, and teacher job performance. Again I'd like to emphasize that as a student, I feel extremely safe in my school. the most unsafe I've ever felt was "bugs in the food incident" a couple of months ago. The building has 3 SRO officers, with guns, tasers, and officer-level hand-combat skills. the abc6 report, while having a slight ring of truth, attracted some extremely negative attention to the school, quite unjustifiably. And again, I'd like to say that it is important to portray all sides of a story, so as to be unbiased and objective. Thank you, and goodnight.

As long as Mitchell is mayor the teachers will suffer.

Josh has betrayed the very people who supported him.

This thread is about legitimate grievances being ignored and then denied. Who cares about the old video? Not me. There are so many problems with the direction this system is going. I'm reaching a point where the high school staff does not deserve my efforts. Let's direct our attention at the elementary level. That is where teachers are being completely abused(I don't mean by students).

Josh Amaral has let the educators and students of New Bedford down. I guess that's what happens when you send a boy to do a man's job. Grow some stones, Joshua.

Why is it so easy to fast track all her expensive plans? We have no books, limited resources, super cold buildings, horrible tech, weeks w/o Art Music Phys Ed The SC has not made one decision that has improved the school day for my students. Maybe next year?

sorry, I do not believe for one second the above comment was actually written by a student at New Bedford High School. Could it possibly have been one of the two young men who lied through their teeth on the radio last week?

So naïve, so idealistic, wait until you grow up ,leave home ,work for a living under a tyrant .

I have to say, I also suspect that an adult and not a NBHS student wrote that above post. What high school student refers to him/herself and peers as "children"? I think that there is a lot of baiting going on here.

Thank you

I will never forgive this school co. for ignoring many voices in this city in blind admiration for Dr. D. I am heartbroken for the students that will continue to be tested more than taught.

To the NBHS student... You said,
"Every successful sports team makes cuts. Every successful team (which is essentially what we are, playing the game of education) makes cuts" is very true but they NEVER fire 50% of the team, they fire the manager or coach.

Pia, do you really have to log on as a student? Teams making cuts? True but the use of this blog for propaganda and manipulation has very little to do with turn around. Your convocation speech on the school web page looks great - again the use of media to portray your efforts as right and just. Why were you let go from Attleboro - do some research people...talk to members of the Attleboro school district or simply do some Google searches. Not a pretty site and that is exactly what's headed to NB next year after the fear mongering and cuts. She ticked off people enough to fire her and her Napoleon complex. What are the negative implications of a complete state takeover? The state would dump tons of money into the school, provide much needed resources for our students and a regimented mandate for classroom instruction. Sounds pretty good right about now. I say come on in Gov P and we're all yours. IT HAS TO BE BETTER than Dr. Doom and her henchwomen are doing now.

Has an MTA lawyer been sitting in on any grievances? At what point will they actually make a difference for their card carrying members?

Anonymous said...

The depths that people will stoop to. So much talk, so much talk. Teachers are and will continue to be abused under this Superintendent and Mayor....smell the coffee, grab a picket sign and WALK OUT!!!!!

The elephant has never met a teenager who would refer to him or herself as a "child."

Isn't the headmaster at NBHS losing his job. It has been posted for over 2 months now. I don't understand, the "fire the coach/manager" comment. Isn't that exactly what they are doing? I have also heard that many of the admin at PRAB are also losing their jobs if they haven't already. So it looks like a bunch of "managers" are getting fired.

Figures!

Sounds like Durkin is the jury, judge, and executioner. The mayor and School Committee goes right along with her every one of her wishes.

SAD

When I hear, read, or speak her name, I feel utter disgust. If any Attleboro teachers read this, would you please give me a few survival tips?

Didn't we have to take that test on ethics? Wasn't conflict of interest a big NO NO? But yet, dumb and dumber are exempt! Really?

Anonymous said...

Isn't this a conflict of interest?

The mayor and the SC are weak.

I totally agree with the conflict of interest. Level II grievance go before Pia. When she denies it, the Level III once again appears before her. This is like a person going to court and the judge sets the sentence. The person and lawyer go for an appeal. The appeal is presented and heard by a different judge. The same should apply with the grievances of the school department. I am surprised our FFP Mayor would allow this to happen. Makes me wonder!!!!

On another note, at the last School Committee meeting he took an item out of order. He had to be reminded that he needed to have a roll call vote--still does not know Robert's Rules of Order after two plus years of being the chair!

Wasn't mitchell a really lousy lawyer and got kicked off some case?
