The Unger rag is once again criticizing New Bedford teachers.
Why shouldn't the City Council get involved in helping run the schools? They were elected by the voters of the city to ensure its well-being, and they understand budgets. Most if not all, are alumni of the NB school system. On the other hand, the newspaper has been trying to run the schools for some time now with their editorial positions, public forums, etc. Who elected the s-t to anything, and what are their qualifications?
Sad to hear about another NB teacher retiring prematurely due to harassment with the Pia Principal overkill observations. I'm sad for the children will never know her.
Yes, we need to make room for Marlene's son. He's got a job at Roosevelt but such a bright young man will do well at the hight school. Mom and he have all the answers.
Coming from a student's perspective, I find it quite absurd to assume that someone as great as Doctor Martin Luther King Junior would be on one side or the other. I think he would cringe at the hate some of you thrown around towards each other. The Standard Times has no authority, you are correct, but they do have the right to cover any side of the story. If ABC6 can pick and choose one side, why can't the Standard Times? I agree that a desire to be college- and career-ready is what makes a student just that, however in an urban area like this, that desire may need to be awakened in many of my fellow students, who have, perhaps, lost their way, due to many various reasons. The teachers who are unable to awaken that desire will be those who are leaving. Those who are invested in not only the content of the class, but also the present and future emotional and economic health and success of their students will be the teachers who are offered their jobs back.
You can believe that if you want to. Did you factor in the "who you know and or who are you related to" component of the choices? Does anyone know if the HM, AHM, and House Masters at NBHS have to reapply for their jobs? Most of them got their jobs because of "who you know." Doesn't the NBEA represent them also? I haven't seen much written about the plight of the administrators.
Headmaster and his assistant headmaster will be gone. It's the law. Housemasters under unit B can reapply but under the reorganization there are no housemasters positions. So far Headmaster position has been posted 3 times. I assume no one is meeting the qualifications or is crazy enough to take it! Reorganization? Upper school, lower school. Headmaster, a principal for each "school". A Dean of Students for grade 9, another for grade 10. Still another for grades 11 and 12. Lead teachers for departments. Oh don't forget a CEO and a director of Technology. I didn't see it mentioned where special needs falls or a guidance/support staff. This should be interesting especially with a new staff!
Of course MLK would be on the side of our teachers. He was killed at the time he was marching with sanitation workers that were being treated unfairly. Our teachers have been working in dire conditions for years-and now after holding up the system they are being blamed and pushed out. It is an American Tragedy right here in NB.
I wonder how many of the current administrators will be fitted into the new positions with different titles? Remember, they got their jobs mostly through politics. If you put lipstick on a pig, don't you still have a pig? How many of the chosen teachers who only taught two periods a day with the best students will be retained? That's right, two periods a day with advanced classes, a duty and a prep. Few if any discipline problems, above average motivated students and small classes since the numbers got smaller in the upper grades. These people got these schedules because of who they knew. They will more than likely be retained because of who they know. With all due respect to the student/s who write in, you have no idea of the politics and the group dynamics involved in these decisions.

^ the are also are going after the city council.
If the school committee would do their jobs, the city council wouldn't have to do it for them.

The newspaper sounds desperate to survive but in the end the will perish.
If Dr. King was alive he would be marching with the teachers. Bob Unger would be using his enquirer to bad mouth him.
Bob would be the one holding the fire hose.
You know what makes a student college and career ready? Desire to be college and career ready...yep..that is all.
All of a sudden, City Council is qualified to help run schools? In my opinion, yes, they are more qualified. That school committee is useless.
Where's Waldo? I mean Bruce. Why is he silent? I thought his wife is a teacher at the high school.
^he's silent because his wife will be one of the "good" teachers that will be rehired. She has nothing to worry about.
Jack's relatives will also be all set.

I wish jack custodiio were still alive. He would be going after those hack relentlessly
Do you honestly think Dr. King would be dealing with a few union jobs or focusing on real world issues.
I think dr king would help because of the age discrimination that is going on and the abuses of teachers by principals and dr durikin...

One has to wonder if remaining at NBHS will be a blessing or a curse.

Dire conditions ...... I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not ?
We aren't comparing marching for civil rights with the turnaround plan are we?
Things aren't so bad the teachers union agreed to longer work days for additional pay .... Please let's keep things in perspective
^ I have every right to complain just as you have a right to criticize me for exercising my right.
