The fact that teachers are being targeted by administration and despite years of good observations, many teachers are getting unsatisfactory reviews. Anyone else feeling the pain?

Sure am feeling that pain. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy as the saying goes. These administrators seem very callous to what they are doing. Very painful!

I noticed how the New Bedford Police officers have a new 4 year contract, where is our contract?

Our contract continues to be ignored. Elementary teachers were to be paid for one hour of common planning but we were told there's no money for that. Police will now be able to resume taking watered down course work to boost their salary. Where is the equity? Where is the respect for our dedicated teachers?

The New Bedford school committee, the mayor and the super's deeds really stink of treachery and corruption! Conflict of interest, how is this happening? What happened to our step raises, when is the 90th day? New Bedford has truly lived up to it's name "armpit" of the south coast with it's poor quality, dirty leadership.

The 90th day has come and gone... but really you should be asking about the 91st day... that is the day our step raises become reality. The payroll dept is behind about 2 weeks so we'll be lucky if we see it in this week's check.

Let's not forget the abuses teachers are experiencing at the elementary level..they are being turned into slaves with their master administrators

The Standard Times has become more rabid in its attacks against us.

^ the abc6 news coverage really rattled their cage. The sound pretty desperate going after channel 6.

Kudos to channel 6.

Lou is an ass.

Lou, I don't know how you do it. The same person that just called you an ass may need union help in the future. Unless and until they are personally impacted by a work related abuse situation, and have walked in those shoes- they should just stay neutral at the very least. We have a contract, the contract is not being honored, the abuse shall continue.

Will we be meeting again as a collective unit? Things appear to have gone from bad to worse and perhaps we need to collectively put our heads together to help one another before we all go down with the ship.

Wake up and WALK OUT people.

Irritated about these professional development meetings disguised as "Assistant Superintendent meetings". Mandated staff meetings are NOT to be used for professional development!!!! Wasn't that established long ago????
Another way to suck the life out of the staff.

The elephant wonders why no one ever speaks of the local demographics when discussing the problems of the school system.

Don't the teachers object to being blamed for problems caused by others?

Anonymous said...

Years of good observations from the administration who got us in this predicament. It's not that teachers are being targeted, it's that the students are being prioritized.

To the elephant: Of course the teachers object to being blamed; however, there are too many ostriches with their heads in the sand, too many chameleons who are constantly changing their colors, and too many hyenas waiting for the kill.

You want to prioritize students? How about we put more effort and invest more resources toward identifying and intervening for students who are living in such utter dysfunction that their most basic of needs are not being met. Students who are witnessing violent crime, substance abuse, and prostitution, not out on the streets, but in their own "homes"- if they have homes! I challenge anyone to take a walk down Acushnet Avenue in the north end when elementary students are getting off their buses and listen to the way their parents and/or guardians are speaking to them--then Dare to wonder why respect for anything, much less education, is a foreign concept to many of our students. Dare to wonder why teachers are getting the f-bomb thrown at them all too often. The students who want to learn-- who value education-- can get an excellent education even despite mismanagement of school funds, lack of resources, outdated educational infrastructure, and administration looking to implement changes that do little more than manipulate statistics that affect the appearance of improvement, rather than facilitate genuine improvement. Why? Because the educators, students, and involved parents make it happen.

Heard on the Phil P.'s show with the mayor that the mayor called the audience at the School Committee meeting "peanut gallery." A caller to the show mentioned this during her phone call after watching the meeting. Apparently someone called out during the meeting and Mitchell said "we don't take comments from the peanut gallery." He did mention about the public comment; however, his out burst was loud and clear. Is he (Mitchell) for real? I can believe this man got into and graduated from Harvard University! This only shows what he thinks of the citizens who attend the meetings. He lacks basic servility.

As per usual the Standard-Times is protecting Supt. Durkin as she is their proven leader, at what I don't know as I have not seen any improvements.

Enough please with the economic and social injustice! It's like a broken record with you elites! In places like NB people have free housing free food free education free Obamaphones free healthcare. Where is the injustice? The Teachers in NB are victims of a nanny state that has failed them. All of the resources that should go to education go to these leeches of society. Wake up Teachers!

Would you trade places with the "leeches" you think are using up all the resources in this nation?

I wonder how money can be found to post two new administrative positions when budget cuts have drastically changed our schools' culture?!? We have more students per classroom with a decrease in student support. How can we teach our students to be competitive for ex. in STEM, or STEAM, when all technology and most of the arts have been cut? When do we acquire resources to meet the Common Core Standards instead of referring to hard copy resources that are at least 15 years old? Yet the most detrimental effect towards learning has come from the incredible disrespectful and unsafe behavior towards ALL adults. Even with the best classroom management in place, the students know that the consequences will be minimal or non-existent because of the lack of appropriate social-emotional resources AND the mandate to not suspend or refer to an alternative school setting. Will this ever change and when?
