Education liberates our minds and widens our horizons, and gives us the ability to make informed choices ... By Eddie L. Johnson

If you plan for a year, sow a seed.
If you plan for a decade, plant a tree.
If you plan for a century, "EDUCATE THE PEOPLE"!!!

The above thought provoking statement has always remained with me, taught to
me and my class mates at Lucy C.Laney High School, Augusta, Georgia-1962, by
homeroom teacher, Bernadette Williams.

This lesson of life, has helped me to appreciate the far-reaching value and significance of a good education.

Education is a ladder to climb to new and unforeseen heights.

The future of New Bedford's children, depends on the quality of our education system, which includes the guidance and leadership of parents, students and teachers, elected school committee and school administration, who must instruct and prepare students with educational readiness, and a quality education.

We, meaning community-at-large, should always be involved in the quest for knowledge and excellence in education.

Education liberates our minds and widens our horizons, and gives us the ability to make informed choices.

Education is by far the most conventional means of opening doors of opportunity.

A good education,however, goes beyond obtaining a college degree, or learning a vocational trade and landing a good job.

The pursuit of education is an ongoing process.

We live in an ever changing world which requires us constantly to be prepared to adapt to new ideas, different cultures, and conflicting views.

New Bedford, being both a caring and sharing community, hopefully will unite around the issue of Improved and quality education for "ALL' students that needs, desires, will work hard and strive for success in their educational endeavors.

There's no meat here to debate. I can tell you one thing that will not make a more inspiring school day--an expensive new reading program/textbook. We must continue to expose the bland school experience our elementary kids endure. If we don't increase Art, Music, and Phys. Ed, we will not be sending the type of students to middle school that can continue to have "grit" and motivation. School will hold little joy and that's when teens/pre-teens turn to unhealthy activities to seek escape.

I love Eddie Johnson.

The ST is all for the huge cost of the new reading program. What a joke.

Pia has the "Little Train that Could" complex and needs to be derailed. I want off this train.

Teaching in NB is no longer a labor of love. They've sucked the joy right out of us.

SC members appear to be knowledgeable in theory only, but they have lost touch with reality years ago. Some are so old that it begs the question as to the last time they were in a classroom really teaching? When something becomes obsolete, you change it for a newer model. Same applies here.

Open court is wicked old so why not buy a new one?

Number One Teacher
By Joanna

I’m happy that you’re my teacher;
I enjoy each lesson you teach.
As my role model you inspire me
To dream and to work and to reach.

With your kindness you get my attention;
Every day you are planting a seed
Of curiosity and motivation
To know and to grow and succeed.

You help me fulfill my potential;
I’m thankful for all that you've done.
I admire you each day, and I just want to say,
As a teacher, you’re number 1.

What's a better investment--more Art, Music, and Phys Ed., or a reading program? Any effective teacher could make Open Court rigorous. It is filled with award winning authors and many genres. I'm "wicked" old but I can still teach like a champion, I just need some planning time.

Rigorous to you is different to me..it's subjective and full of bias

Wonderfully written by a wonderful human being...

So---- job fair and where were teachers handing flyers out with facts of what's going on ? That would have made a statement but instead we do a vigil to make a statement .... Great job !

Eddie, PLEASE run for mayor!! I'll be your campaign manager. I'll have plenty of time, since I was forced into "early retirement". A soon-to-be-former NBHS educator.
