Pacheco School: How could this wonderful school go downhill so quickly?
I've never written on this blog before, but I feel compelled to share my concerns. As a long time mentor at the Carlos Pacheco School I am saddened and angry at what has been allowed to occur at this school this year. When I enter the building I am no longer welcomed by the secretary or principal. I am buzzed in at times by a student, sign in and report to my station where I work with my student. I see chaos, students displaying disrespectful behaviors such as talking back or yelling at teachers, students roaming around and fighting with each other. How could this wonderful school go downhill so quickly? It's the same population and same teachers there so I can only theorize it has to be the lack of leadership. Someone needs to intervene before this school falls flat like the Parker School. I have the utmost respect for the staff at this school and have personally witnessed their hard work and determination in making it number one.

Please remember Pia is steering the wheel. She does not care about student behavior, allowing teachers autonomy to address such behaviors, prevents suspensions when they are rightly deserved, and has students hand out reapplication packets. Students now run the schools. We have pleaded for assistance, but this is Durkin's call.
It's a shame to see the type of leadership that has taken over the Pacheco school. I worked here when the "true" principal ran the school. There was respect and hard work on the part of the students. The teachers need support and now they have none. THE PARENTS need to step up and take responsibility for their child's actions. The principal , if you want to give her this title, has her head in the clouds. WE need a leader who has the brains and the leadership skills to deal with this school, in this area.
Pia hand selected this principal. She also chose the inept Hathaway principal(then removed him to go to NBHS)...the mayor claims she "Has high standards, and makes excellent hiring choices."...REALLY? I just gave 2 examples--I know more exist. She does not make good choices.
Seems like the principal took a role that she cannot handle. If Durkin is not going to make the decision to fire her, the principal should admit failure and leave!!!! Let someone who can do the job take over.
Does Dr. Durkin know? And has she done anything?
This breaks my heart. I worked at Pacheco years ago and the students you're describing are not Pacheco children! Pacheco students work hard, are respectful and care about their education. What has this woman done to these children?!?!?!
She picks and chooses her own people with the stipulation "You do as I say. This is a title only. You cannot think for yourself or you're fired."
This is happening not only at the elem. level but the middle school level as well. The kids are running the school. This is what we have inherited from Dr. Durkin. Thank you School Committee for this gift of incompetence.
A wonder appointment by Pia. Guess Pacheco will go from a level 1 to a level 5 school in a year. This principal should have been replaced in the fall.
Great job Pia. Are you out to bring down another school in the district?
This Stuporintendent has destroyed the entire NB School system. Trust me, schools at ALL levels will soon be hitting rock bottom. Teachers need to stand together and do something. Stage a walk-out, stage a call-in day...something. So far, the joke of a mayor and joke of a superintendent are winning. Very sad.
There needs to be serious test security ensured at Pacheco during MCAS. The principal will be desperate to appear effective. How are the Benchmark scores going there?
That's a powerful statement about MCAS and compromising the validity. Are students taking pictures posting it on facebook?
^
Taking pictures of what?
I think Durkin wants this school to fail so she can get complete control over this one, too. This woman is on a serious power trip at the expense of innocent kids and teachers.
The students at Pacheco are running the building. She has no idea what discipline, structure, and consequences are. She thought it was going to be an "easy" assignment cause it's a Level 1 School.
There needs to be serious test security at every school, the principals are desperate to look good,I wouldn't trust any of them at this point,,
She shouldn't let the teachers and administrators from their own schools monitor the tests
I definitely would consider the validity of the testing especially this year.,,,
What is Durkin doing about this mess at Pacheco? Is she just going to sit back and let the school go downhill? She needs to admit she was wrong in her choice of a leader and rectify this ASAP!!
Why does she allow this woman to stay at Pacheco, but she moved the principal from Hathaway who couldn't make the grade? Sounds sexist to me.
Pacheco school has wonderful teachers. The school just lacks leadership. I have two children who attended CP and are now in college.
Schools are only as "wonderful" as their leadership.
Pssst, Hey, Pia,
Are you listening? It's quite obvious you've got a big problem here! What are you going to do about it? Ignoring it will only lead you to destruction. Wake up before it's too late!
Principal at Pacheco will move to another school in New Bedford to get a fresh start after the teachers and parents have turned against her.
Schools are wonderful because of everyone who works there works with honesty and integrity, and no favoritism and bias...
Very hard to find in New Bedford Public Schools.......
Is the mayor going to allow this school to fall apart under this new principal? What about Dr. Finnerty? Didn't he interview the previous principal on his cable show about how she turned the school around from the first Level 4 school in the state to a Level 1? If either one of these two men cared, they'd look into this and intervene before it's too late. Can this city afford to have another failing school?
Oh Pia knows exactly what is going on at Carlos Pacheco School. She is choosing to ignore it. Well let it be known that SHE can't say she wasn't forewarned when the xxxx hits the fan!
It's so clear to all the staff at Pacheco that this administrator does NOT belong there. She is ill equipped to handle the issues that arise, and avoids discipline as if it were the plague. She gets involved when she shouldn't and is hands off when she should be involved. Teachers are miserable because the discipline issues are out of control, they are not valued and there is no support. Children think they can run the school and why wouldn't they when an in school suspension is spent as her buddy!
chaos, disrespect, students fighting, no organization, and definitely NO LEADERSHIP!!!
How would you like to kick a substitute teacher in the thigh in front of his class, leave a big bruise and get an indoor suspension that includes coloring, doing errands, sitting in the office buzzing people into the building, and having a grand old time while his classmates are doing school work? It's the new and "improved" way we do things now at Carlos Pacheco! It's a sure way to raise test scores.
What's Pia going to say when this school drops from Level I? Does she even care? I think not.
