Rigor and engagement ... Submitted to NBEA

Someone forgot to tell the parents that they need to be involved in the education of their kids. Open House last night I had 8 parents show up caring enough to find out what their child is doing this semester. I actually was thrilled! I looked down the hall and heard crickets several times through the night. We were in school yesterday for almost 13 hours. PD after school and then open house.

Today I feel like crap. I don't know if it's from being exhausted or if it's the beginning of the waiting game. I'm really frightened about the outcome. Should I get the thanks but no thanks letter, where will I go, what will I do? I'll probably loose my house, medical insurance and a style of living that I'm comfortable with. I'm scared. I'm also concerned for my friends/colleagues that are in the same boat with me. Please pray for ALL of us. We need you, our community to step up and support us. This isn't right. Loyalty and dedication doesn't matter under this administration. What does that teach the kids?

You are right. Prayer is about the only thing left to do. We have been abandoned to an unworthy and unfair system. God help us all.

It is a sad situation when parents do not show up or even inquire individually about their child's development and cooperation in school. Perhaps, there should be a law requiring the attendance of parents at Open House days to force them to be involved. If their own parents don't care, then what hope do these kids have to succeed. There is too much of a burden and weight on the education system to provide everything to these kids.

God helps those who help themselves. We are still a Union and as such have not exhausted all avenues of defense. I implore you to stand together and stand up to the indifference of the administration by participating in all upcoming Union activities ... if not for yourselves, do it for your family and the students of NBPS

I think you have had the support of the community, but it has not and will not change the way things turn out. I think one thing that has been missing all along is the support of your fellow teachers - I have attended two rallies (one last May when the City Council wanted to cut another $4million from the budget, and the most recent in January) and neither were well-attended by New Bedford teachers. There were many retired teacher supporters, support from many other unions - but WHERE were the teachers of New Bedford?? This is your battle and you have to participate - you can't expect your President or other union officials to fight this one alone.

Now you get a chance to walk in someone else's shoes.

Pia is advertising another "big bucks" position to replace the last whack-job for Family Engagement, Diversity, and Equity. They'll rein those parents in!

Would someone please explain to me how Pia can hold a job fair to attract new hires? Also, is it true that she has demanded that every school be represented and that current employees run the booths?

I love the snide comment about feeling what others feel. If I am not doing my job, I should worry about losing it. However, I arrive at work two hours early and stay an hour late every day. I do not use sick time or personal time unless it is an emergency. I buy clothing, supplies and various other items for the families in my classroom. I treat these children like I treat my own. How would I want my own children treated? I feel as though I am very fair. I work hard and do not complain about the vacation days or the pay. However, I still fear losing my job to an out of control tyrant who for some reason has gained control like the next Hitler? It may be us worrying now but it will be the community worrying after they have seen the destruction this one is capable of creating. For the person who said prayer is the only thing left. Prayer is the most powerful thing! But let's remember when God sends us a lifeboat, we need to get in! Save each other.

I heard some rumors today that the school day will be changing for all elementary schools in the city for the next school year. When will this be negotiated and will we be informed about our change in work hours? Many of us work other jobs to supplement our income and planning on work hour changes is helpful. Will the day be increased? Or is it just an hourly change?

A job fair! Who in the hell is she going to attract to teach in this hell hole that she created? Certainly not Buffy or Tad from TFA! She is a woman in need of anger management courses!

Parker teachers do need to reapply for their jobs and do more work without any extra pay. All New Bedford teachers need to take the Parker situation to heart. This could be you in a few years!

My family member has affiliations with Massachusetts job fairs and teacher recruitment. Word is...the Superintendent is a tyrant and applicants are looking elsewhere.

It's not just the word it is the WORD! You will never work harder or be more disrespected than a New Bedford teacher.

There are some excellent elements of how we can engage families more deliberately and I am hoping as we move through the Level 5 process with Parker, that we will be able to use some of those lessons learned for other schools and we can replicate these practices," she said.

The above quote from Pia herself! Really, did you use your Parker strategies to get the 4% attendance at your parent meetings. We should take a note off your page. 4% now that is an attainable goal. I have had a 92% attendance rate for the parent meetings I have scheduled this year. I guess I have more rigor. What we can take from Parker School is that Pia Durkin and Mitchell Chester have something together. What is the connection? We need to keep digging. There are bones somewhere.
