103

Since July 1, 2013 ... 103 of our members have resigned/retired or are resigning/retiring this year. This number does not include the 8 non-union administrators who resigned or are resigning/retiring this year. It also does not include the people who are in the other bargaining units.

Or let go by administrators hoping to save their own skins despite exemplary teacher evaluations. Is it really too much to ask for our educational leaders to be grounded in morality, ethics, and integrity?

Durkin has no idea how to build a team for success. These numbers speak volumes.

I am so sick of the "good ole boys" network mentality that refuses to identify patterns of destructive behavior and impose rational solutions.

Pia Durkin should have taken some hints from Nelson Mandela as how to lead and inspire.

We have a mayor, superintendent, and SC who have failed to develop relationships that connect with teachers; trusting, cultural, and socioeconomic relationships.

Based on this observation, Pia Durkin, mayor, and SC have lost credibility, and we are not going to cooperate in, or support, nefarious agendas.

durkin creates nice flow charts.

If you surveyed ALL the teachers in this district, the underlying theme would be the same: The mayor, SC, and superintendent are ethically deficient. Teachers have no value. You either play by their rules and place yourself at risk, or you are ousted! It is so frustrating to experience this imbalance of power.

New Bedford teachers need more support

Perhaps the administrator in charge of providing professional development workshops for the teaching staff in the New Bedford system should consider a workshop that is applicable to violent issues that are occurring in the New Bedford school system.

The thought of bringing in a group of Navy SEALs for a workshop on hand-to-hand combat or self-defense would be helpful to the faculty and support staff. The U.S. military is always cooperative in providing this service.

I think it is safe to say that every teacher, both retired and still in the trenches, in Southeastern Massachusetts sends positive empathetic thoughts to the New Bedford teachers who are struggling in the classroom with violent disruptions like this ... and that is putting it mildly.

...as well as the excoriation of Superintendent Pia Durkin...

Excoriation? Neurotic excoriations are self-inflicted skin lesions produced by repetitive scratching.

I could name several lesions right here in New Bedford: Unger, Mitchell, SC, and the infamous Pia Durkin. They have many of us scratching our heads in disbelief of the terrible conditions we are forced to endure as teachers.

I am a parent and I will not allow my child to even step foot in NBHS! It's not the teachers I blame, it's the parents of these bums who don't do a damn thing to discipline their child. It's Durkin , who is obviously incompetent, I am being kind. A mayor who is crooked and weak and a school committee who has to step down! Keep the teachers , get rid of the idiots!

Thank you for parents like yourself who can see through the crap that the teachers of New Bedford have to put up with. I sent my daughter to NBHS and the first week she was there she was hit in the face with a pencil thrown by some hooligan. She wanted to stay there and so she's a graduate of NBHS, but if I had to do it again, she'd have gone somewhere else.

I would like to know how these numbers stack up to years past.
Unfortunatly dr durkin creats a toxic environment for all!

Educators of New Bedford, I am a former colleague of Dr. Pia Durkin and can provide testimony to her deviant behavior. During her time here in Attleboro, Pia managed to break our spirit. Many great teachers fled the district. She was underhanded in her methods and that outraged many parents and teachers. She used strategies like threats, fear, and intimidation to bully her staff. There were many days when we left in tears. Some of the most damaging aspects were the cover ups of incidents that endangered the safety of students. We are still recovering. I implore you to rid yourself of this woman. She is capable of anything. She views teachers as expendable. I thank God every day that our school committee saw her true colors and parents had the fortitude to confront her lies and deception. That is why she was fired from our district. We fought hard and strong.

Team-building is not in durkin's repertoire. She only knows how to divide and conquer. This is her recipe for success along with fire and hire (her own minions).

WOW a total of 111 people and that doesn't include the people who were terminated from the high school or Parker plus there are two months to go and more could be retiring or resigning! Bet this year's total will surpass every other year and that you would have to add several years to come up with the figure for this year!

durkin loves numbers she must be elated

Time to gather evidence and have a formative assessment to rid this district of Pia Durkin just as others have done. She stinks!

Sadly, we can't always reach the parent by phone.

we have a school committee that lacks any ethics. JOSH AMARAL-where the hell are you ?

Reducing suspensions by 50% is part of durkin's SIP and DIP. She is not going to jeopardize that on behalf of the teachers. She made a promise to the STATE.

People have had enough. I'd say game is up for durkin. Time to kick her to the curb before another incident happens

To all members of the NBEA past and present, concerned parents and students:

At 3:15 on Friday, May 2nd, Unit A members will meet at Keith Middle School to determine if the climate of fear identified in December 2013 has been rectified by the existing school administration, school committee and mayor. If you feel that violence remains prevalent and fear for our students and educators, please show your support by wearing red and uniting outside of the building. This will mean more to existing educators of NPBS as well as those who have voluntarily or "involuntarily" retired or left the system than you can ever know. It will send a message to elected officials that violence and bullying are unacceptable in any of our schools. It will let school officials know that we want better for our children and the New Bedford Public Schools ....

Could someone help with perspective. How does this number compare to years of past? How about a approximate annual average of teachers resigning/retiring for the past 10 yrs?

NBEA Board Member said...

The number of people retiring this year was discussed at the last board meeting. Approximately 30-35 people retire per year.

Thank you. Obviously a dramatic difference. I am one of those who was not ready but am fortunate to be at my max %, so in the current atmosphere have chosen to leave. My thoughts are with those of my colleagues, those considered to be "middlers" not close enough to retire but too many years devoted to NBPS to look somewhere else. Good luck to all!

i don't get it though reducing suspensions and keeping kids in class that are doing dangerous things ?! doesn't that steal learning from the kids who want to be there!

Heartbreaking to hear these stories.

I'm sick of living in this nightmare. It's high time we took back the school system that we've dedicated our lives to. We can't afford to waste anymore time watching the destruction.
