The ONLY reason why he got introuble we because this video went viral and got introuble THIS week. This happens all the time there. The teachers are being tortured, taunted, harassed and made a mockery of by these punks on a daily basis, I've heard teachers are actually afraid to go work. The superintendent lies about the numbers of incidents and have tripled this year alone. And the good students suffer as well...it makes my blood boil! All while they are trying to keep their jobs because they need to eat, support their families and themselves. Finding a new job as a teacher is extremely hard...it's sad. They need to hire veterans and put 1 in each classroom and instead of all this state standards crap and testing they should be making them take a class that teachers them about life, and have a bootcamp class for those who act up, every single time. That would make more jobs and respectable adults when they come into the real world
Disturbing to see students from NBHS actually defending this "man". Not only did he throw the chair with extreme force--he yelled "Give me my fu*kin' phone!" I may have even heard the b word in there at one point. This is verbal abuse, abuse of a female, and threat of bodily harm--over a phone that would be returned in the manner school officials sanctioned.
My heart goes out to her and to all the teachers and paras of New Bedford, who deal with this daily. The Superintendent, Mayor and School Committee MUST do something drastic to change this type of behavior...ZERO TOLERANCE in all schools! Ridding the schools of this type of behavior is the ONLY Turnaround Plan that our schools needed. This is just the reason why we have so many low level schools? How do you work in an environment like that and have any real teaching and learning going on? This is just pure survival!
What I would like to know is where this student was taken when he was removed from that class on that day? I believe this is a big cover up, because everyone seems to be claiming they didn't know anything about it, until the video came out. I believe the Headmaster was told to squelch any incidents by the Superintendent, thus no one knew. I hope this investigation puts the blame where it truly belongs...Headmaster, Superintendent, Mayor and School Committee. Nothing can convince me otherwise. This is very hard to believe that no one knew what was going on that day...maybe by not acknowledging it...they thought it would go away. Just like everything else wrong with this system.
You know, I hate to say it, but is something really wrong with the system, or is something really wrong with the people who are being allowed to have children in this city? I can't get over the fact that we, as US citizens, are paying tax dollars to let idiots have more babies than we would ever be able to afford. I would have loved to have more little ones, but because I was a teacher, and my husband didn't make great money, I was forced to stop reproducing. What the hell are we doing as a society??????
The December 20, 1999 edition of Time Magazine featured a follow up story about Columbine. The Elephant sent a letter to the editor accusing Principal Frank DeAngelis of covering up the bullying that was obviously occurring there and sent him a courtesy copy. On January 5, 2000 he called me at home. After a few minutes of conversation I became convinced that he was as much of an bully enabler as Pia Durkin and her supporters are.
It didn't work out too well at Columbine, but at least Frank wasn't injured or killed.
When Mike Longo used to say, "If not us, then who?" It was a rallying call to all who worked for and with him to join the long line of strong and compassionate educators in New Bedford and do your best to make a difference every day. Our work was about individual children and ensuring a brighter future for New Bedford one child at a time. Where did that passion go?

I wonder if Steve Urbon will write another story with a snippy line like, "The culture of victimhood at the New Bedford Educators Association got a big boost last week", like he did a couple of months ago?
And it's good to hear the new superintendent and headmaster are right on top of things. It only took a week for them to find out one of their teachers could have been seriously injured.
The Elephant is admittedly a sarcastic nonconformist who can't resist an opportunity to inject unpleasant realities into any conversation.
In response to the claim that the "The Superintendent, Mayor and School Committee MUST do something drastic to change this type of behavior"...
um...well...
No they don't.
Understand something important. All human interests are functions of self interest. Our capitalist economy is founded on the principle of self interest. Our electoral system of government is also founded upon self interest. Pretty much everything that living things do is a function of self interest. And what the above mentioned knuckleheads are doing is also guided by self interest.
The Superintendent, Mayor, and School Committee will never get beaten up by a chair throwing sociopath or shot by someone who spent their adolescence being beaten up by bullies. All they care about is making their numbers and allowing the world to see what really goes on in the New Bedford school system interferes with that objective. They're going to make their numbers and worrying about the lives and safety of teachers and students just isn't in their self interest.
Remember what's really important folks. They and their pensions are quite safe while you live in fear of attack and can't even depend on having a job next September.
I am sure Pia will insist this is another "isolated " incident. As I listened to her interview I was deeply disgusted by her insinuation that this teacher is in any way responsible for not having the proper tools in her toolbox. From everything I have read the students are mirroring inappropriate intimidation toward our educators. I have come to the conclusion that this superintendent is nothing more than a high paid bully with political backing. I question the tactics the superintendent and principals use to motivate teachers. They are not methods of motivation, but rather methods of intimidation. Using these techniques says so much about the desperation of the superintendent. Yes, desperation. She and her followers are so insecure in their own abilities that they must destroy anything that show teachers in a positive light. This is not a great leader. This is an insecure bully. Those who follow in her footsteps should be pitied, not hated. They lack the confidence to stand up to this bully and so they stand behind her. This in itself gives us a deeper understanding of the integrity they possess. They have lost their moral compass and their self respect.
Physical abuse cannot be tolerated. Nor should the emotional abuse these teachers are faced with each day by this superintendent. It is just as harmful.....if not worse. Denying them a voice is the reason these type of situations go unreported.
How many more excellent teachers have "resigned" or taken "early retirement"? I credit Joanne for speaking out against a system that cares less about finding solutions and more about destroying the remainder of great educators we have.
To the teachers who show up everyday and fight for our children and our public schools, I applaud you! I support you and have the utmost respect for you! Stay strong, keep fighting for the children of our city and know you are not alone.“Success is not measured by what a man accomplishes, but by the opposition he has encountered, and the courage with which he maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.” Charles A. Lindbergh
The problem is when you demonize and demean teachers and those who are in the classrooms you create a culture of disrespect for teachers and the message is it is ok to abuse teachers. This is the message that has been out there from the media, politicians, and school administrators. "go ahead abuse get violent do whatever you want, those teachers are lazy greedy and selfish" That's not true but it is the message. There is no possible way that the administration didn't know there is this kind of behavior going on. They are the ones that make the policies that foster and encourage this disrespect.
The problem is that when you demonize, demean and undermine teachers constantly you create a culture of disrespect for teachers and those trying to do the job of TEACHING. But we have been getting the message that its okay teachers are lazy greedy, selfish and it their fault America is becoming a third world country. It is a constant message from the media, the politicians, and school administrations. There is no way the administration didn't know they set the policies that foster this behavior.
I hate to think what might happen if over 100 of the teachers at NBHS next year are brand, new "wet behind the ears" graduates. It's a frightening thought - does Durkin actually think that a new crop of teachers is going to change what is going on at that school? But...then again....maybe she will train them in the proper "strategies" to diffuse that type of situation. Really??? These situations are happening because there are no consequences for that type of behavior. No one in their right mind will want to teach in New Bedford.
Durkin has to go! Where is the elusive Josh Amaral? I guess he has become a joke like the rest of the school committee, mayor and Durkin. Terrible! I know this teacher, she is so dedicated. It's a shame some punk from a lousy up bringing is allowed to abuse teachers. I hope his ass goes to jail!

I thought I read the superintendent acknowledged that she speaks with the NBHS headmaster twice a day. If this altercation was not part of one of those conversations over a five day span then you have to ask yourself what in the world are they talking about! What are the priorities? Is someone not being truthful?
Mitchell will never own up to his mistake bringing Pia on board. He did nothing to stop Carrigo from terrorizing our colleagues to their breaking point. He won't admit failure this time, either. His allegiance to teachers is very clear.
To the blogger above who said we must do something ... I felt the same way you do until a good friend explained to me, just this morning, the value of patience in this situation ... I believe the conversation went something like this: Dr. Durkin is now being called on the carpet for the climate of fear which she repeatedly denied ever existed in NBHS and throughout all of NBPS. This is a direct result of her directives to reduce reprimands, suspensions and expulsions. Dr. Durkin now has to defend her inactions and indifference to a situation she created, one which the city and whole world now know exists. In effect ... She has been handed a rope and is now in the process of hanging herself publicly. The question that remains is will the mayor, SC and local legislators allow this indifference toward teacher and student welfare continue? If they do ... They hang themselves right beside the superintendent in whom they have misplaced all their respective confidence.
If the Standard Times were serious about journalism, they would look into Durkin's denial about knowing what happened. Why would a headmaster on his way out not tell her about an incident like this? She is hiding the truth, as she has so many times before. Thank God for ABC6 and too bad the Times can't tell a reporter to find out the truth, even if it contradicts their editorial love of Durkin and her version of progress.
Interesting how Roosevelt Middle School recently has a similar incident where a student was also throwing a chair the difference was this time the chair was thrown at another student. Just like the high school this incident was shoved under the carpet. All to keep suspension rates low.
To bad their wasn't a video of this incident maybe something would be done to address the safety of our students.
Deescalation? What has the superintendent done to deescalate the fear, mistrust, and overall self-worthiness that teachers have have felt since her first days? These feelings have been pervasive throughout the district and are even worse now. I was rooting for her at the beginning but it was not long before she lost my confidence. Good teachers are leaving or retiring in record numbers. Many are just being quiet about it. This city just doesn't have a problem, it has a crisis on its hands and I hope the powers that be realize it. The patient is bleeding to death and band-aids are being used to stop the hemorrhaging. This is a challenging city to teach and administer, but the tactics being used to solve its problems are just wrong. This whole debacle will continue to unfold poorly if the course of action is not corrected. If positive changes do not occur, maybe sorry to say, it can be used in a case study or positive learning experience for other districts who really want to get it right.
It does seem like the time has come for a vote. Only the teachers can take this step. You must call Lou in record numbers to tell him how you intend to vote. How else will he know if this is the time to make a move that could leave us all further destroyed by our community?
I agree with the above post that it isn't just a problem but a CRISIS! I teach at the high school and for most of us, it has been a wasted year with time spent on collecting "data," disciplining, and classroom crowd control (no help from office). Students are in control, electronics are everywhere (used rampantly in hallways and in classrooms),and very little learning is taking place. The nose dive that NBPS has undergone since Dr. Durkin has arrived is staggering to say the least. We are losing so many excellent teachers at the high school due to "forced" early retirements and layoffs.
I'm afraid to say that the NO CONFIDENCE VOTE will come from the teachers being laid off or retiring, either willingly or forced, as the others who are remaining will be too scared to go to a meeting for fear of losing their jobs. When we had a union meeting in the high school last December, many teachers had "excuses" for not going. I could see right through it as they pretended to be going somewhere other than home after school.
The time to support your union is not when you need help, it should be when you recognize destructive labor practices and injustice in the workplace--in other words MONTHS AGO!
I have worked with students with serious emotional and behavioral disorders as well as mental health issues. In the schools I've worked in, this type of behavior would be immediately dealt with. The student would be consequenced. Also, before the student returned to school, both he/she and the parents would have to be brought in and agree to certain parameters. Just because you are an urban school doesn't mean it HAS to be a violent place.
I hate to tell you but years ago, around the Columbine years, I had a student get down on one knee and take a bead on me and pretend to shoot me. He got "expelled", i.e., sent to the alternative school. It was only for the rest of that school year. He was back at NBHS the next Sept. So much for expulsion....

My heart goes out to Joanne and I applaud her bravery. This is business as usual at NBHS and it is time people knew it.

Mayor Mitchell should point out that this is all a mistake. Since Dr Durkin took over everything is lollipops and ice cream.
Bob Unger will set everything straight.
Marlene Pollock should take this young man in. He's obviously misunderstood and he was just having a bad day.
By this time next year he'll be crowned Mr Whaler and all will be well.

Wonder what all the people who signed the full page ad in support of Pia Durkin are thinking!!!
can someone please explain to me how transferring the student to an alternative high school is an expulsion?
ACUSHNET residents…….DO NOT send your kids to NBHS. I did and it's the biggest mistake I ever made!!
