Jon Mitchel has the answer to all of our city's problems. ... Submitted to NBEA

Our mayor, Jon Mitchell, has found the answer to all of our city's problems. That's right....his answer is - PLANT TREES. This is going to improve our city's image. You've got to be kidding me! I am positive that planting trees that will probably take 20 years to grow large enough (to even be noticed) is going to stop the drive-by shootings, robberies, drug deals, and blight in New Bedford. Oh....and of course it is going to make our children do so much better on MCAS and put an end to all the discipline problems in our schools. Maybe all the bullies in our schools can "hug a tree" instead of choking other kids to the point of unconsciousness. I hope many trees are planted around the perimeter of NBHS - I am positive that gazing at a sapling will prevent the chair throwing, fighting, and cursing that is a daily event at the high school. This is by far the most RIDICULOUS thing I have ever heard. By the way, this is only going to cost $500,000!

This fellow is out of touch with reality. He needs to understand that people want solutions to problems. Not band aids and rhetoric. Planting trees is a nice thing to do. But addressing the mess that is New Bedford Public schools, a city with high crime and unemployment takes more than planting trees. It takes someone with vision and understanding. How many abandoned buildings in your city Mr Mayor? How many police out in the neighborhoods? How much graffiti not being removed, trash being removed, teachers being fired, kids afraid to go to school? Planting trees is nice, but it won't fix these problems.

Trees and money. That's the answer? Wish it were that easy. The Beatles had it right,"money can't buy me love," well it won't buy an education either. It won't make students care any more about their education, or the necessity to complete classwork or homework with some sense of accomplishment or pride. And here's a flash, it won't make students behave any better. No money won't be solving those problems. That starts at home with family and parents.

Business leaders, the journey for career ready students begins at home.

Our school system perpetuates appeasing parents and students, yes students, by passing students from grade to grade without understanding the targeted curriculum. Makes'em happy.

Let's stop blaming teachers for student's lackluster desire to learn, and focus on the smaller picture, the parent, which we all know is the bigger picture.

So a city should not plant trees? So the cost of 0.025 % of the annual city budget is too much, even when defrayed by state funds?
Focus people. Focus.

I enjoy the one brave Pia/Mitchell defender. Good for a giggle. The mayor with his tree shovel reminds me of Dukakis in a tank.

Maybe instead of planting trees, the mayor could buy new books for the schools, a few updated computers...police officers in the schools ...believe me..they are needed!

Plant trees for all his rich friends and neighbors.....

Look across the street from the at how poorly trees are cared for by the less than expert handlers at the dept of public infrastructure. This will be another waste of money effort and energy. The trees and parks in the city need attention; do that!

i agree with the above, this tree discussion is silly. for all we know new bedford got grant where we had to plant trees.
maybe if there wasn't so much mitchell bashing on this site, he would invite concerned teachers for a round table.

^ I have to agree with the post above. Maybe if Mitchell wasn't trashed on this site, Mitchell would be an honest man and a competent mayor. Maybe he wouldn't have hired Durkin and maybe she should would not be firing teachers and terrorizing those that are left behind. Maybe he would have listened to the suggestions that parents and teachers made at the phoney forums he put on when he first got elected. Maybe the the Acushnet kids would still be attending nbhs and Durkin's goals would be realistic. Or maybe, pigs would fly if it weren't for this site.

^ Somebody should offer the Mirchell supporter a little blue pill for gullibility.

To Mitchell (does not deserve title of mayor) or the blogger who posted the Round Table comment, do you really think we are STUPID? This goes beyond the planting trees. It is a little to late for trust and transparency. I think you are worried about the power of our voices. You had your chance, but you hung us out to dry. Stick your round table in a square hole. You have no integrity. Our faith in you is nonexistent. You will never be forgiven for hurting teachers and our students. If you were a real man, you would have stepped up to the plate long ago!

All the planting of trees and flowers will make the city look beautiful, however, it will not change the fact that the city is riddled with crime, filth, blight, gangs, prostitution, an out-of-control students in our school system, and weak leadership and School Committee.

The old saying still holds true today: "You can't judge a book by its cover." A beautiful cover doesn't mean that the story in the book is great! Same applies to the plantings, it won't change what we have here in this city.

It is time for the Mayor, superintendent, and School Committee to wake up and smell the roses. All the nonsense, violence, intimidation, and turmoil should have ended in the Fall which is didn't. How long are they going to wait until they see the light and get the picture?!!

Aren't the trees a Mayor and Mrs. Lang project?

I think trees will help beautify our city. I also think that among the top 100 things the mayor should be doung to improve our city planting trees ranks about number 200.

How about "daffy" dills?

Here's to hoping that all those trees with all those leaves will further add to covering up all the blight New Bedford has to offer.

Anyone who has ever spent a day--or even an hour--inside NBHS would know that the trees would be invisible due to the condition of the semi-translucent windows, i.e., you have to open them to see what the weather is like outside.

When my children were toddlers, we would buy them an ice cream on the way home from getting their shots at the doctor's office. This was our way of distracting them from an unpleasant but necessary experience.

Planting trees is also a distraction. But it's meant to distract the public from the fact that they live in a poor, high crime community. People like trees and it creates the appearance that the mayor is doing something when in fact he is not. This is very common in politics.
