With the following statement Bob Unger has hit a new low.
"It looked like a staged event, something the thug and a handful of useful idiots conceived to get famous for a day on YouTube." Bob Unger 4/6/2014
Unger couldn't resist taking a shot against other news organizations for covering the story. He's upset because serious news agencies reported on a story instead of making news up like his rag does.
"news organizations in Boston and Providence (and one local social media website) threw it up on their websites with only the scantest reporting because the only time they pay any attention here is when something bad like that happens." Bob Unger
And Bob had to take a shot at the union. You've gotta love Bob, bad heart and all. His tabloid is on life support and he still doesn't understand that he is destroying his paper. He should have been fired long ago for being an incompetent boob.
"bad blood between the administration of Superintendent Pia Durkin and an entrenched, embattled teachers' union whose members are losing jobs makes the task of raising student achievement across the schools that much harder." Bob Unger
It seems that no matter where the award-winning superintendent goes, controversy follows; Covered up rape, kids lunches being thrown out because of their inability to pay, teachers being fired, students handing their teachers their reapplication packets, high employee turn over, and an astronomical increase in assaults against teachers. She really is an award winning superintendent.
ACTION needs to be taken NOW! Parents, Teachers, and the whole Community need ANSWERS. The Superintendent, Mayor, and School Committee have to be held ACCOUNTABLE. This is OUR city, OUR school system, and OUR children!!!
Yes Bob, the chair throwing video was probably an attempt to bait Mrs. Maura into a reaction. Yes, it was also probably a way to get their "fifteen minutes". And yes Bob, Boston media rarely mentions the city unless there is a negative slant to it. Yes Bob, your paper has been on top of the events unfolding in the New Bedford community. Now for the reality check, Bob. While the event was an attempt to bait Mrs. Maura, she kept her calm and did nothing wrong when handling the student. That's what you get with a committed veteran teacher. How will some recent college graduate, Teach for America teacher handle that type of incident? While the video was an attempt to get "fifteen minutes" of fame; you and the other local media outlets gave it to them as well. Now for the biggest reality check, Bob. You are the NEW BEDFORD Standard Times. It is your job to report on the local news. While it would've been nice to get a lot more traction on the turnaround plan in the Boston media, it wasn't their job. Most of their readership are concerned with matters within the greater Boston area. You are the voice of New Bedford. Unfortunately, you rarely sound like the voice of this city. Bob, this cities failures are not some recent phenomenon. For a long time, the people of New Bedford have become more complacent when it came their schools and how their city was run. They did not question any of the decisions made by the School Committee or the past three mayors regarding education. These are their schools and still they did not attend either of Dr. Durkin's meeting on the structure of their children's high school. When the turnaround plan was decided upon, where was the outrage from the parents? New Bedford High School should be a jewel of the city's education system, not an afterthought. Parents should not feel that GNB Voc is the better school choice for their child. Parents should have been screaming for a better school for years. They should have been outraged that their child's school does not have proper 21st century technology to enhance their learning. They should have been outraged when there aren't enough textbooks to go around to every student and should have felt obligated to pay for any lost or damaged books given to their child. They should be outraged that Dr. Durkin is removing perfectly competent teachers to replace them with unproven neophytes and other district's cast-offs. Above all, Bob, the parents of New Bedford need to take a more active role in their own child's education. They need to show their child that education will only grow them as human beings and offer them far more opportunity than living a life without it. They need to work with the teachers to make their child the best that they can be. I don't disagree with Dr. Durkin's message that we need higher standards in the school, I disagree with the methods she is employing to get the outcome.
Dr. Durkin THOUGHT she would serve an urban district well. She was wrong. She is not the right fit. When you make poor hiring selections based on appearances and grand speeches filled with edubabble-you have revealed your incompetence. Pia Durkin is not what this type of district needed.
Doesn't Unger know that Durkin told principals to cut down on suspensions, and that misbehaviors allowed to continue will create a culture in which the kids are running the schools? Many teachers in my building fear something terrible is going to happen because of the permissive attitude mandated by Durkin.
BTW believe what you want to believe, However, the TV coverage of New Bedford HS has been amateurish and sensational. Like it or not the Standard Times is a well regarded professional news organization. I have never worked for the paper but believe that you should stop shooting the messenger and focus instead on the multi-generational dysfunction that has been New Bedford Public schools. Everyone is to blame for this debacle of public education. Present and past school committees parents and unions previous mayors and all the leeches (such as the City Councils past and present) who preyed on the system for patronage. This is an ugly mess and we lucky the DESE has not taken us over (yes). You self absorbed NBEA bloggers should stop whining and start working towards a better future for our students.
I wonder if Chief Provencher has read the report about the chair throwing incident and the student who punch the guidance counselor. Two assaults in one day.
I am personally insulted and even more upset that the vaunted Mr. Unger has implied that this was a staged event. What if someone from his staff were the victim of an assault and someone published in the newspaper that it was a staged event? I don't think he would be very happy about it. That is how I feel right now; as though I have not only been assaulted by a student, but now by a supposed professional editor who has never spoken to me about the situation, unlike Liz Tufts from Channel 6 who was not afraid of the New Bedford School Dept. administration as the Standard Times seems to be.....how do I know so much about this? I am the teacher in the video. I will continue to speak out until there is no breath left in me.
^When the messenger deliberately distorts the facts in a biased manner, he is no longer simply the messenger.
Teachers have been trying to work toward a better future for our students, but have been disregarded in just about every way. What do they know anyway, right?
To the blogger who said we need to stop whining and work towards a better future for our children.....I would love to know what you think we are doing? The long days we spend at school correcting papers, preparing lessons, analyzing data, creating intervention groups, collecting material from any resource we can get our hands on(district does not provide ). Please explain to the NBEA bloggers how we are not working towards helping our children? Are you a teacher? If you are then why do you feel a need to support a paper who only prints the negative aspect of the teachers and never the negative aspect of the administration? The TV coverage to me was what that situation needed. Why get mad over something that was a fact? It happened and it happens more than Mr. Unger would like to admit or you would like to admit. If you are not a teacher, you have no idea what we do on a daily basis. No one does, unless you are an educator. The ones that are screwing education up here and in the country are NOT EDUCATORS!!! The common core is financially backed by Bill Gates, Not an Educator. The Race to the Top Grant, which New Bedford hopped on board for, funded by Bill Gates. The Pearson company and all the other companies that are profiting off of creating new material for the common core standards are not all educators. The mayor is not an educator but he knows what is best for the students? If his children were in a school where the violence was out of control, he would be the first person to pull his child out of that school. The school committee has people on it that are mostly not educators with the exception of Finnerty who was one of the lovely people who was working for the New Bedford School system when it was hiding all of this mess that is now coming out. Why don't you ask Finnerty what he was doing when he was getting paid his administrative salary? Was he looking for a better leader for our school? Was he making sure we had supplies to teach to the children? No he wasn't. He was one of the lovely people who agreed when the school committee and mayor decided that we didnt need a search committee to find a superintendent when they let portia bonner go. That brings up another point, who's idea was it to let bonner go? Was it the teachers? No....it was the mayor and school committee. They are only backing Durkin because they don't want egg on their face for picking another failure of a leader. Count how many superintendents have made their way through this city. Is that our fault? No its the city's fault. The parents and taxpayers don't get involved until situations like this arise and then all of a sudden they want to blame everyone but who's fault it really is. Mr. Unger plays a major role in what gets reported and what doesn't. Why doesn't he dig into Durkin's past and find some information to print? Why doesn't he investigate why Parker was labeled a level 5 when they met their targets last year on MCAS? He is a reporter, he is suppose to report newsworthy stories. All he does is blame the teachers and write negative stories about us. If he told both sides to the story he would get more respect. Our blog is our way of airing out our anxiety and stress without fear of retribution. If you don't like what we are saying then stay off of it!!!
Let the state take over the schools! That will get rid of the school committee and neutralize the mayor. I'll bet they won't ever take over New Bedford because then they would be on the hook for everything; they will never step up to the plate because they will never put up the money, resources, or energy necessary to fix the schools. The state doesn't give a s#!t about New Bedford. We know that. Except when it's time to collect our taxes, or kiss a$$es for votes.
The "staged event" comment was way out of line. That was the cheap shot of cheap shots. Way out of line! Unger did make a point about Holyoke being the welfare capitol in the 80's and the feeling that New Bedford could be next. I think it already is. People come from all over to the Whaling City for all the social services we provide along with all the freebies given out at the state level. Because of this massive migration of welfare recipients of our city it sure feels he's right. We are probably the next Holyoke.
Hey, Bob, why don't you spend a week at NBHS and see how safe you feel? And maybe you can witness some more "staged" events; let's see how you would handle it.

Mayor Unger gave us Portia Bonner and Pia Durkin.
^This man has caused a great deal of harm to our school.
The Elephant strongly suggests that staging a crime should be treated as legally indistinguishable from committing a crime.
That won't happen of course.

award-winning newspaper my $$$. I get it from my neighbor to line the parakeet cage.

^but she's so good because Dana Molher Faria and bad heart Bob love her.
Jon Mitchell pandered to Bob and what we see happening is the result.
New Bedford Guide and this blog probably have more readers in a day the bob times has in a week.
ACTION needs to be taken NOW! Parents, Teachers, and the whole Community need ANSWERS. The Superintendent, Mayor, and School Committee have to be held ACCOUNTABLE. This is OUR city, OUR school system, and OUR children!!!

I would take Unger to court and demand a retraction for minimizing the events. The city should foot the bill!

Hey Bob, you forgot to mention the Kardashians.
Somebody didn't get his lollipop or sticker.
This is just a ploy to spark attention and deceive the public.
Ask yourself what does Holyoke and New Bedford, two failing districts have in common. Answer: Bob Unger. Get rid of Unger and we'll be fine.

More to the point, why is "Mr" Unger so down on teachers? Did he get an "F" in expository writing class?
Bob unger owes Joanne Maura an apology........
He owes every teacher in the city an apology.
I would think ignoring and then blaming the teachers of this district should be considered "shooting the messenger"...No?
