Bob Unger continues his assault on teachers ... by a retired teacher

And so it goes....another vile and vicious attack by the Standard-Times on Lou St John and the teacher's association. I couldn't even finish reading either of those articles - my blood pressure was at the boiling point and Bob Unger is not worth it. I guess he has nothing better to do than launch his daily assault on the teachers of New Bedford. He treats them as if they are the lowest form of humanity...but that's what he is. He knows absolutely nothing about what goes on in our schools or about the teachers who work there.

I am puzzled by the outpouring of support for Durkin......exactly what is it that she has done that makes her worthy of such praise??She's one of those people who talks and talks and says nothing.

And how about that Jack Nobrega.....sleeps through most school committees meetings, but shot his big mouth off to the Standard Times. Somebody must have been holding up cue cards so he could read from them.....he never says anything during SC meetings.

No teacher or any of their family members should EVER buy a ticket to his fundraisers again. He's been on the SC for over 30 years....what has his contribution been to improving our school system? I think he has been part of the problem, and now he is pretending that he wants to be part of the solution.

I must also add that I find it hard to believe that Lou and the teachers are being blamed for all school department problems - why has no one looked at our former superintendents and school committee members and given them a share of the blame??? Why are they allowed to get away without answering a single question about the role they played in this mess?

I just sent this message to Tony Cabral-

Hi Rep. Cabral-

I am writing to ask you to consider writing a letter of support for our teachers and their union. I believe the comments made by Mr. Nobrega also need to be countered. Our union leader is not the cause of NBPS problems. This is union bashing 101. I am sure you would never be one that feels the end of a union is good for an American worker in any field.

Thank you-
A New Bedford Educator

Bob Unger has always hated teachers and unions.

Blaming teachers for the problems at NBPS is ridiculous. Those with power to make policy and spend the money are the people who ran out school system into the ground. Durkin's policies are not fixing anything and she is spending even more money. Why are here no checks and balances?

Unger is definitely anti-union.

The S-T usually belittles Nobrega as being the King of patronage and for promoting the status quo. Now, he is their guy for bashing the NBEA.
Jack Nobrega reminds me of the movie "Weekend at Bernies." I think he died 30 years ago. He doesn't offer any constructive solutions or anything of value. Nobrega is a rubber stamp for the Superintendent, but will knife him or her in the back to follow the prevailing political winds.
Nobrega is not a standup guy.

I can bet that the "extra" funds for the school district will not be spent on the kids. It will fund her top heavy administration.

Boob Unger reminds me of a kid who hated all his teachers because they told HIM what he needs to do. Boob knows that there are plenty of parents in New Bedford who share the same scorn for their teachers because they didn't want to do what their teachers told them they must do. Guess what? I didn't like all my teachers either, however I came to appreciate what they did for me. And guess what else? I'm the intelligent person I am BECAUSE of what those teachers DEMANDED of me. Get with it New Bedford people, there should be no scorn for teachers….There should be GRATITUDE!!!

Didn't Bob write that he had once been a teacher or sub and wasn't very good at it a few decades ago?

Have you noticed how many reporters the Standard-Times has hired only to be replaced (not sure if they were let go or they quit) within the past 10 years. Here are a few names: Barnes, Allen, Anderson, Evans, Sherman, Cohen, McDonald, etc.

Does anyone remember Dick White?? I loved reading his stuff.

Here is another name of a former S-T reporter--Nicodemous. He covered the City Council meetings.

Jack Nobrega is a major part of the problem with the New Bedford Public Schools. Look where we once were and look where we are today!!!

Time to step down.

When is Unger and Urbon going to put the blame where it needs to be place, squarely on the shoulders of the parents.

For many of these parents, the school system is a free baby sitting service--and we provide breakfast and lunch for their children.

When will the S-T write editorials blaming the parents? I don't know what the S-T is fearful of as these people don't buy or read the paper.

Well, I do agree with putting the blame on the parents. However, that isn't a popular position across the entire country!. I am a parent, and I did the best that I could. I showed my 3 kids that having a job and respecting the people that paid me was first and foremost. We as a couple, tried our hardest to get to work and we were an example for the children we had. But, that doesn't mean we were successful in making our kids independent. I'm not at all happy with the way things turned out for my youngest two children. And I worked 36 years in the same job. I don't know why these young people think it's OK to take from the system, but they do.

When I was a child, my Mother made us breakfast. There was no entitlement or handouts. I know that some people really need this, I am okay with the people who really need assistance and try to work. But when certain people make welfare their job and life long career, I have a major problem with that.
