Sad example of the disrespect and how things have degenerated. Students who have seen little to no discipline or support of teachers certainly realize that consequences are few and far between. Just sad.

There has been talk of senior pranks for weeks. I advised students that NBHS has a history of omitting that practice because we don't stoop that low and this is not the year to be trying stupid pranks. No one has a sense of humor and we all just want the year to slip quietly away. But students who have seen far too little discipline think they will get away with this. It is time to slam the book at the select few who think they are TEFLON. We need to set a different tone for the upcoming school year and there is no time like the present. Our parting gift to them.

All these issues seem to be happening on Dr. Durkin's watch. Is this what the mayor meant when he said that the superintendent is "moving the system in the right direction"?

Lets just keep things in perspective, folks. As much as we'd like to dump this into the whole "our kids are so undisciplined and disrespectful" and "our world is so stressful" categories; kids are kids. This was only a few knuckleheads who did this. As for the rest of the students, they came to school, were told to stay out of the building for almost two hours and conducted themselves wonderfully. Nobody caused any trouble as they had to stand around, uncertain of what was happening to THEIR school. There were no fights, nobody was belligerent, and nobody caused a single problem. Do not condemn the entire student body for the foibles of a few. If they are caught, suspend the offenders and make them apologize to the custodial staff (for creating the mess and making them go beyond the scope of their duties) and to the senior class (who need to complete their finals and spend the remaining time next week thinking about the prom and graduation).

She will pass the buck to someone else instead of displaying the qualities of leadership. Some poor person will lose their head over this because of HER lack of DISCIPLINE POLICIES !She is a terrible example in everyway!

This is a direct result of what's been happening all year. We were told by Durkin last September that we were going to cut the suspension rate by 50%! We wondered. . . . . . how will we accomplish that? What is the plan? The plan was, keep the little felons in your classrooms and deal with it! Oh, really??? That is why a chair and a trash can were thrown at teachers, more fights than ever, various teachers/guidance staff assaulted, and a lack of discipline and consequences resulting. The kids caught on. . . . .let's do what we want. . . .nothing will happen to
us! We reap what we sow, folks! Somehow the teachers will get blamed for the vandalism.

What's sad is the first custodian on scene called the 90k facilities manager and business manager at 6 am and did not receive a response until after 8am. The facilities manager is a 24/7 position and if this guy can't do his job then its time to find someone who can!

I'm sure the Unger times will find a way to blame the "union" for this.

I believe that statement is true. NBHS was one high school that did not participate in senior pranks (until Pia Durkin became superintendent that is)

This act of defiance is a direct result of nonexistent discipline policies and the tone that students pick up on set by our morale-boosting stupidintendent. Her first year has been a bust. Durkin and her cronies have done enough damage to last a lifetime.

Seriously, they will pin this on the teachers and the union! They will find a way. When will people realize the chaotic situations that we have been complaining about are true?

I wonder if this will effect "the anointed one's" evaluation. I don't expect that it will. Someway, somehow this will absolutely be blamed on the teachers....I wonder what else teachers can be blamed for - nothing would surprise me.

Sorry to stray off topic but hiring principals and vice principals with little or no classroom experience is part of the reason why we are in this mess! I have a friend that teaches at Kempton school and when a teacher questioned the new principals teaching credentials, Durkin stepped right in to defend her newest kiss a$$! It's no wonder that our best people leave !!! What a joke!!!!

I wonder if the security cameras are even operational. The little pranksters would know.

This is the first time in 14+ years that I've been at the high school that we've had school cancelled because of a "prank". Of course, it's also the first year that we had to stand outside for an hour or more because of a "coffee latte" bomb scare and stand outside in freezing cold weather and snow without coats because of another bomb scare. Great job, Pia! Bring on the rigor, it's SO working .... not

Lou St.John, are you responsible for this?

Anonymous said...

Damn you Lou! Oh wait, it MUST be my fault... After all, I'm a teacher... EVERYTHING is my fault when it goes wrong. I can't wait to see what the very pricey new and " dedicated to NBPS" administrators are going to do next year.

The Teflon Superintendent. Our mayor is her Stepford Wife. The SC is made up of their children.

Remember the thermos of milk? Bad publicity and infamous notoriety seems to follow Durkin in each district she was associated with. The rape cover-up was most alarming. All red flags were ignored. We should be doing what other districts have and fire her immediately. Durkin is a liability w/o integrity. There are suits pending against her for neglect and discrimination. Is this the road NBPS wants to travel? It's quite costly and taps into the budget. Teachers, parents and former colleagues are bringing these allegations to fruition. Pia Durkin is a magnet for controversy and questionable practices. Buyer beware! It's coming to a town near you.

We are the steel wool to pia's Teflon.

Wake up
Durkjn is doing Mitchell's dirty work busting the union and bringing down overhead

THEY GOT THEM! Hearings today. Administration being very tight lipped.

Anonymous said...

Glad to hear they got the students who created the vandalism. The questions are why is the administration being tight lipped?

Where is the transparency in government?

Will this be reported in the paper and on the radio?

What action will Pia administer to these students?

What was the cost of the cleanup? and will the students be paying for that cost?

Actually they need to be tight lipped especially in a case of a criminal investigation. There was an article in the rag. Mr Kulak also made an in school announcement after the hearings. It fell on deaf ear as far as the students were concerned. Won't be his problem next year.
