New Bedford parents plead with the School Committee to keep the Kempton School open during a budget meeting on May 11.

Are the parents of Kempton School being used as pawns in the queen's game? Think about it. With the exception of a feeble minded and easily led school committee, most tax payers are against a budget our city can't afford so it makes perfect sense.
Threaten to close a school, scare the parents, their children, and the staff at the school and immediately you have a base of people to put pressure on those who have to power pass the budget.
Eddie Johnson has often said that she is the most skilled politician out there and I have to agree with him. Our "tough on crime" is no match for her. He can't control her.
Is King Jon worried? Is it part of his plan to stick it to the city council? You see, the king is up for re-election and he really hasn't done anything he promised. Crime is high and going higher and he's created a mess of schools and city. Wind is now gone and the train to the casino seems like it will be late to the station, if it ever arrives. So what's left for him to do? I know! He can say he's keeping taxes down. He can say he is the only one on the school committee to vote the against the queen's budget.
Everyone wants low taxes, right? So now he's the hero.
She still wants the money and I think he wants to give it to her but he doesn't want to jeopardize his reelection. So getting parents at kempton to put pressure on the city council makes sense. If the council gives her the money, his hands are clean and the council is left holding the empty bag. He can now claim to be a fiscal watch dog and council is the bad guy.
It's a win for the King and Queen and the committee of week minds. She'll get a lucrative contract with a nice pay raise and the she have plenty of money to hire more henchmen. The only losers are the taxpayers, parents, kids, and teachers. And perhaps, the city council.

Who decided a new Pearson math system was a top priority during tough times?
NBPS can keep the Kempton School up and running and add more art-music-phys ed for our deprived elementary kids if we just slow down with this math program that requires tech we don't have. IT's not worth the price tag until we can use all the components. We not only have poor tech and infrastructure in most elementary schools--we have plenty of families with NO INTERNET.

I loved the parent who questioned why Durkin doesn't take a pay cut! How about letting go about 4 of her cronies and then we could afford to keep Kempton open. Over paid butt kissers!

For Pete's sake, the meeting was held in the damn hallway and was over capacity with 15 chairs. Close it. Accept it. Move on.

This school department and school committee has difficulty telling the truth. The meet last night began with the principal of Kempton talking about "the move". Why would the "move" be in her vocabulary if it weren't a done deal and if promises haven't been made. The teachers from Rodman continually spoke about "our kids". The Rodman kids are not being torn from their school, teachers and staff. Nether do not need to walk to school from distances of more than 1 mile in all types of weather. Neighborhood schools must be neighborhood schools. They shouldn't be huge faceless places. If we are in need of closing the school then the district needs to be re designated. Families shouldn't need to apply for alternative placements at other schools. also, please refrain from blaming previous superintendents and their administrations. It's not nice, nor is it fair.

Yes, the school may old, and need some repairs, but so do 90% of all the other schools. I agree the Durkin needs more money to hire teachers for students that have English as a second language, And for arts programs, but closing Kempton isn't the answer, closing schools will not save NBPS. It will only create a bigger mess, if you combine the schools, I think some children will get lost in the shuffle. Having a smaller classroom, is better for the teachers and the children. Closing schools has not worked well in the past. Why extend Friday's not when they are low on the budget.

Terrible idea to combine those two schools, rod man will become overcrowded and it's so dark and dingy.

SO , yes The meeting was held in a hallway with no room. THE SCHOOL THEY WANT TO SEND OUR KIDS IS THE SAME SIZE...11 class rooms 8 are full do the math we have 5 grades plus K .The reason it was OVER CROWDED was because of the concerned parents who love that school ..CLOSING IT AND MOVING OUR KIDS TO OVERCROWDED ROOMS... AND THE CLASSROOMS THAT ARE NOT READY FOR OUR KIDS TO GO THERE ...NO MONEY FOR OUR SCHOOL TO STAY OPEN BUT THEY HAVE MONEY FOR MOVING AND RENOVATIONS.. AND MAKING OUR KIDS WALK 1.5 MILES IS OK WITH YOU ..

I'm starting to feel like this is a distraction. The mayor and Pia seem to have preplanned this budget dance they are doing. He says everything she wants is legit but we can't pay for it. She comes back with another way to save and he says still not going to work. Somehow they will both be satisfied and only the teachers and kids will suffer.

I am sure that Art ,music and physical education will be kept at once every two weeks. My child loves art and wishes that she could receive art once a week. It doesn't look like that is going to happen. Once again, the kids and the teachers are brushed to the side.

Think the city council needs to look into the waste of money taking the Friday prep early dismissal is......first off they start getting students ready for buses at 12:30,,so school is really done then or even before, then the buses and dismissals aren't really done till at least one thirty, then teachers clean their rooms ,do their plans and run off work or do correcting and computer work, and sometimes collaborate with other teachers, but if they don't like their peers then that doesn't happen,or the principal tries to give them work to do(usually the principals work she should be doing),or call voluntary meetings which are illegal according to contract, but if you don't go your not considered a team player ,then the principal will retaliate against you,

Think they should just keep the Friday planning time, because by Friday @ 1:30 everybody has just about had it.

Save the million dollars and put it toward field trips and cultural activities for these children.

Don't waste your time pleading with the SC, their hearts are as cold and hard as Pia's.
