Cotter: No explanation for transfer back to uniformed police

It has been awhile since I've written to this board but this article has triggered a need to do so again. I've known Chris through the years and found him to be an great resource to the district in his capacity of resource officer, policeman and detective, and as a member of the school committee. To be transferred without adequate reasoning is a slap across the face for a job well done. Do I think in some way, even if subtly that certain people or person had a hand in this action, why of course. No doubt. The message to all, "Play ball, or you're out." "Mess with me, and I'll find the time to get even." After all, all we have is time. If I were you Chris, this move should only heighten your sense to do what is right for the citizens that you serve. Many say that don't take the "job" personally, but how can you not. May 2017 have a better ending than the beginning. BTW, you can tell that a certain person has done all that can be done to out the experienced teachers. Just look at the responses, or lack of responses on this blog. What a shame, to be given an anonymous outlet to share opinion and not take advantage of it. Shameful.

Thank you for the support and kind words. This will only heighten my demand for what is right for the City, Students, and Schools.

Typical old - school politics by John Mitchell. My beliefs that he is a weak mayor is confirmed. His lack of acknowledging the truth leads to his fear of the truth since the truth exposes his weakness. This decision by John Mitchell is self-centered because it is a disservice to the parents, faculty and students of the district. His sole concern is retaining his position and not his constituency. John, you took an oath to represent the citizens of New Bedford. In doing so, you first make the commitment to make decisions that benefit those you represent. This decision clearly does not benefit the needs of the district. John, you also fear Chris Cotter's candidness, a trait that you are lacking. So in your self-interest of re-election you also damage the integrity of your new police chief.
Be a man while being the Mayor and face the challenges instead of concealing the truth, you'll be viewed as respected instead of as a coward.

It's a conspiracy. And we have proof, right?

When the Mayor and his Dr. Destruction Durkin tried(and failed) to discredit Detective Cotter the first time, they apparently patiently waited for another opportunity to shut him up. The new chief(weak pawn) probably doesn't even remember when the bug was put in his ear to "mix things up" in the department for the "health" of the NBPD. Sure. That's what happened. Just like mixing things up our schools has worked--NOT! The loss of hundreds of competent people must be for the "health" of the district. Please check School Spring and see how "healthy" things are. Ive been around a long time and Ive never seen so many people exit during a school year at all experience levels. 1st years, mid-career, and those with decades of service here. G O N E and GOING.

I really hope most teachers don't buy in to this side show. One too many people out there who cant tell difference between taking on the powerful and getting something done instead of just throwing anything at the wall to see if it sticks. - EH

I'm not quite sure the point you are trying to make EH. I would appreciate if you would expound a bit. I do know that the admin has been chucking many things against the wall since the first days of Durkin's administration. I cannot say that I've seen a difference in outcomes that truly matter. Scores stink, bad student behavior still rules, and experienced teachers that have made a difference have left or they are "always" planning to leave. If one of Pia's plan was to lower the median salaries of the district, I think she has succeeded. If another was to intimidate the status quo, I think she has done that as well. As for Cotter, I think she hates to be challenge, and I think that is what Chris has done. Unlike all others on the SC, Chris has seen our schools through a different set of eyes. Realistic eyes. Others who have taught or held positions in admin are either idealists or just one of the boys. We all can decide for ourselves who is who.

Cotter huffs and puffs but what has he accomplished?

Unknown said...

No there is not!!

What is this question of accomplishment on? For the correct response, one should ask a more clear question instead of huffing and puffing ?

I agree with most of what you say. I just see Cotter and his followers as interested in making a side show.I want what most fellow teachers want. Others want insults and drama. Thats what the latest drama is all about. Stay focused teachers -EH

If you know me, you would know my interest is in making the NBPS excellent again. If I could do the job, without hitting stone walls at every turn, and having to go along to get along, I would be a happy under the radar person. Side show? I'm not thriving on this or enjoying any part of it

there is no side show going on. chris has had the courage to directly confront the failing system that is in place in our schools. unfortunately, he like so many great teachers and administrators have suffered for trying to make clear the wretched shape that our schools are in. our children are being robbed of quality education and values to prepare them for the future. anybody who works and have worked in the current school department knows that it is in dire shape and are not fooled by the media and the petty politics that has hijacked new bedford public schools. chris is not engaging in side shows and been respectful to those who disagree with him. the side show is the system that puts more emphasis on skewed and inaccurate date before the true needs of children, educators and families.

A huge problem for the district is that it is being run by individuals that have not been in the classroom environment, successfully teaching for some time. This has led to the naivety of out with old and in with the inexperienced. Some will say you needn't be a teacher to know good teaching. To that I say walk a mile in my shoes! With all the new instruction dictated to teachers, what has been the results? Flat line elementary and undeniable substandard middle and high school test results. Among the lowest in the Commonwealth, year over year. When is the last time the super and asst super have taught children for any length of time? And when they did, what were their results? Pia and what's his name think they know what it takes, I say they are letting their hubris get the best of them. Chris is doing his best in an environment that is stacked against him. Chris, I guess you'd just better shut up and enjoy the coffee.

If things are going so well with the improvement plans, why is staff leaving Hay-Mac in droves?

Durkin brushes things under the rug all the time. Let see, students assaulting teachers, fist fights in the classrooms, students dropping the F bomb at their teachers, high school thugs leaving classes and walking out during the day.... the list goes on and on. Oh what a wicked web we weave when we set out to deceive !
