Update: Dennis Winn's Professional Development Meetings

November 5, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

Dennis Winn's Professional Development Meetings/Assistant Superintendent’s Professional Development Meetings/Assistant Superintendent’s Grade Level Meetings/ Assistant Superintendent’s Informational Grade Level Meetings are no longer mandatory.

The following is the text of the answer to the grievances we filed on behalf of our members.

"As per request of the New Bedford School Committee, the New Bedford Public Schools Administration and the New Bedford Educators Association have made an agreement that all informational grade level meetings in the future will be voluntary. Teachers who attend these meetings will receive appropriate Professional Development Points for their participation.

Teachers who have attended the mandatory meetings on October 14 and October 28, 2009 will be excused from two (2) future meetings in lieu of monetary compensation. The excused meetings will be at the discretion of the teacher’s immediate supervisor."

Thank you for your show of solidarity and support during this protracted ordeal as we worked to protect the integrity of our contract.

Sincerely,

Lou St. John

This is a major victory for the union.

There was a major victory for the Unit B members of the NBEA also. Why are we unable to share comments???? Teachers are not the only ones who this administration looks to walk all over.

Unit B is not a major victory. Unlike this result for unit A members which is immediate, no immediate results for unit B. So the violation of their contract continues........

whats the background to the unit b issue?

Wrong. Unit B just won a grievance supporting the claim that we also do not have to attend these so called "Assistant Supt. Meeting."
Unit B also just one a grievance indicating that the age old practice of overlooking properly certified people for administrative positions in favor of "assigning" non certified people to the positions will stop.
Going forward, all administrative positions, assigned or appointed, will be filled with properly certified people. A major victory for Unit B and subsequently for Unit A.

Unit B just settled two major grievances. One related to attendance at the so-called "Assistant Supt. Meetings." Like the teachers, Unit B members do not have to attend these meetings. The other dealt with the school department's practice of "assigning" non certified people to administrative positions even when properly certified. people are available.
Going forward, this practice will cease. People appointed to administrative positions as well as those assigned to administrative position will have to be properly certified. Unit B is currently working on a grievance on behalf of the Directors who are being told they must attend these meetings. What part of "Unit B members don't have to attend" don't they understand???
