There’s an amusing letter in today’s Standard Times written by Craig Dutra and Denise Porche, on behalf of the education roundtable, praising Pia Durkin. I find this premature praise to be very telling because Pia Durkin has not proven herself in New Bedford. In fact Dr. Durkin’s contract was not renewed by the previous school system where she worked. Non-renewals usually mean something but I guess Porche and Dutra are so happy to have this union buster in New Bedford that they can barely contain themselves so those facts are overlooked.

I recall that Craig Dutra and his wife get pulled over by the police after a low speed chase on I-195 not long ago. I vaguely remember something about those two getting drunk at one of Mayor Mitchell’s fundraisers and driving home intoxicated putting countless lives at risk. How many people might they have killed had the police not pulled them over and arrested her?

They were driving from New Bedford to Westport but some how missed the exit and ended up driving over the Braga Bridge. She was arrested and charged but didn’t serve any time. He wasn’t arrested because she was driving; I suppose she was less drunk then him. The fact that this Westport selectman and head of the Community Foundation, allowed his wife to drive in that condition shows how irresponsible he is. I would trust his opinions expect to do the opposite of whatever he says.

"Every teacher of impoverished children hopes to have a positive impact on children. And many do.

But to put the entirety of the problem of poverty and social mobility on a teacher's back is absurd. That's especially true when schools are underfunded, required to teach narrowed skills for the result of test scores and profiteering, and teachers are losing autonomy as professionals."

Pia is all about data and raise the test scores, but what she has to realize some of us can only do so much, with 30 plus in a class and no support, what does she think we are super heros ?? I go in everyday and give over 100% but still that is not enough for her and the administration. It gets to be a bit depressing. We never get a compliment only do more , do more. When is the union going to step it up and defend us and fight for what we know we need for our children. When was the last time we were asked what is working and what can be done for the children to help them succeed ???

To the post regarding Dutra, well put. When was the last time, if ever, he taught?

I would be weary of anything Craig Dutra says. He never misses an opportunity to bash teachers and unions while supporting those that bust unions and teachers.

The education roundtable is no good.

I have never started a school year feeling so depressed. Without even seeing the children about to entire my room I have already been told by numerous people how poorly I do my job and how I must somehow produce more and do it better.
The public needs to hear the truth. We have classrooms without supplies ceiling tiles falling down saturated by rain leaking through faulty roofs, 30 students to one educator. We are told we cannot retain poor performing students, yet somehow we are supposed to make them all high scoring proficient students.

Any idea when we are going to get a printed copy of our contract?

Justin Braga....how can we miss him if he won't go away? I thought he was busy being one of the few Republicans on campus at BROWN? I wish I could be proud of him. Sadly, his views on just about everything do not serve as helpful to the people of his home city.

This is exactly what they don't want us to know. Within this network, you are granted special privledges, cushy positions, cover-ups, and one dirty hand washes another.
