There was once a man who knew all the answers ... Submitted by a parent

He knew how to make his country rise up out of the ashes it had fallen into.  And people followed him blindly as their savior.  And he went ahead and eliminated those he deemed unfit. Does anyone else here see the similarities? And no, please don't think that I am making light of genocide, it just frightens me people like Bob Unger and others, who are supposedly informed intelligent community members are blindly following a leader who is not hurting the community.

As a parent of a child at NBHS I am ready to form a parents group to try and counter what she is doing.  I know there would be a lot of support for this as all my friends feel the same.  Do we sit back and blindly follow, as the people of Germany once did and continue to have the wool pulled over our eyes? Hitler used propaganda too, looks like someone has at least done some research.

Standard time article Sunday Dec. 22, 2013 Superintendents stated plan to replace at least 50% of New Bedford High teachers has paid dividends elsewhere in my opinion is a bunch of CROCK. After reading the article with it comparing NBHS with other schools around Ma. The only thing that made sense was what Dorchester did ( building a climate and culture in the school community which included " being partners with the community, stakeholders and students") I do not agree with the firing of teachers because we have FANTASTIC teachers, I agree with starting with students, parents and community. Without total PARTERSHIP/Working together nothing will work.

As David Ortiz said, "this is our city." We all need to stand up and take New Bedford back! Rise up from the ashes Whalers!!!!

PLEASE HELP! As a teacher in NBPS for 35 years, I have never witnessed an attack of teachers as is going on now. Not even close. I am sure I can speak for all of my colleagues when I say we would very much appreciate your help as a parent. We NEED your support. Thank you in advance and have a Happy Holiday season!

Parents are the most important people in the life of a child! You/we are their first teachers. NBPS teachers need your support now more than ever. We are a team in raising and teaching children!

When a city is determined to union bust, they don't care whom they hurt or destroy.

Thank you ! Your support is so gratifying!

Ignorance, Mr. Unger seems to be one of the main characteristics of your writing style.

The articles in today's rag make me ill. The lack of response from our elected officials sends a message about how dysfunctional things have become in New Bedford.

I just wrote something called "Just my opinion". It was not a response to anything anyone else said. Not sure I entered it correctly. Never wrote on a blog before.

Parents definitely need to be responsibility for their children's education and get involved.

Make it happen.

If the schools really are "the last best hope," why are our policy-makers dedicated to killing teacher motivation, collaboration, and morale and instilling a fear-based, competitive business model? The teachers, who you admit in this editorial work the hardest in the most difficult circumstances with the fewest resources, are being sacrificed, punished, and made into scapegoats in this misguided "Race to the Top." Shame on the New Bedford Superintendent and school committee for choosing this "turnaround model" and shame on this newspaper for cheering it on and kicking your dedicated educators to the curb.

I am sotired of hearing about how the poor teachers are getting beat up please spare me the boo hoos .I am a parent and I support any effort to improve our current situatuion for my sons sake .I think and this is my "opinion ' but If your not happy doing your job go find another one !! I am so sick of hearing teachers complain about how they are being attacked you need to look at who your union president is ??/ maybe thats the problem and teachers need to work with oarents instead of making bus feel like we are the Bad guys . We are our Childrens "First teachers " .I for one am a very involved parent and always will be because my Job is to be a Parent . sadly some parents think the schools should raise their kids well the svchools were not there to Raise the kids they are there to "EDUCATE them. So teachers do your job and educate the kids in your care or get out of the profession all together.

Well Christine, glad you are an involved parent. It sounds like you are also a bit misinformed. If you could imagine having a job where you point out to your superiors what is needed for the organization to be successful, let's call what is needed "shortcomings" (disrespect, no discipline, disruption of school environment in and outside of the classroom, lack of prerequisite skills(social promotion), apathy (student and parents),extremely poor attendance, to name a few) AND THEN you are fired because all of these "shortcomings" exist, how does that make sense? A lot of parents are the "bad guys" in my opinion. There are some great kids at the high school, most with great parents and some who rise above the horror of their own situation at home. I don't think a "good parent" or an "involved parent" would take exception to someone saying or posting that some of this is the parents fault. If a parent has/does their job as a parent they should be proud and know such comment wasn't directed at them. If they have the sense to do the parenting I would think they have the sense to see the reality of the situation. Those parents who are not doing there job most likely aren't paying any attention to what is going on in the schools. Hey, did you teach your kid to tie their shoes? Imagine trying to teach your kid to tie their shoes and you have several other kids telling you to go f yourself in the process. Several more pulling the laces out of your kid's shoes. Maybe a few more pulling your laces out. Just an analogy, you have not a clue. Maybe you should run for school committee.

Good point previous poster. I performed that suggested search. Obama supports the turnaround model, teach for America and AmeriCorps. Is the MTA supporting the NBEA?

Thank you to all the parents supporting the Teachers. We need your help. You are invested in your child's education and you are not taking the bait. You know what we are up against every day. Please do all you can do, make phone calls, don't buy the ST and support us. Your children deserve to have Teachers who do not have to live in fear. We went to school, we put our souls into our careers for the privilege of teaching your child. Please help us help them. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I have no idea why Christine would launch a personal attack against Lou St. John... no one is attacking caring parents. Teachers respect parents who are involved in their children's education. What they are saying is....there needs to be more parental involvement. Christine's attitude toward teachers shows that she has no respect for them or the job they do. She appears to be gloating about the current "horror show" that is going on in our city. Her attitude is that "if you don't like your job - go find another one." She's typical of a person who doesn't have a clue as to what it is that teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. If she were being assaulted at her job, abused by the customers who shop where she works, or being treated with disrespect and contempt by management - I am quite sure that she would calling on her union representative to take up her cause. I think her attitude would be quite different if people who came through her register blamed her for the high prices in the store where she works.
