What exactly have the teachers of NB done to deserve so much scorn, disrespect and meanness? ... Submitted by a member

We work hard, devote ourselves to our students and try to share with them the same genuine love of learning that called us to this profession in the first place. I still am devoted to my students, still work hard, and still love learning and teaching; so I do not understand why my colleagues and I are vilified weekly by the various media outlets... When did teachers become the great villains of society? And when some of us actually get upset and offended by this we are treated even worse... I cannot help but feel disappointment in this... Logical, rational discourse has given way to  yellow journalism, biased reporting and slander. To defend oneself invites further attack; to remain silent allows the assumption of acquiesce. "Do not go gentle into that goodnight ... Rage, rage against the dying of the light..."

Dysfunctional communities behave like dysfunctional families. It's not what you've done that invites "scorn, disrespect, and meanness." It's what you are.

Consider the textbook structure of an alcoholic family. There's the party causing the problem, usually the father. There's the chief enabler, usually the mother. Then there are the children and perhaps some extended family members who fill a variety of other roles, including The Scapegoat.

Guess who The Scapegoats for parental incompetence are.

Guess who the chief enablers are.

Hey! Who let that elephant in here?!

Stay out of the hot sun folks.

Fabulous analogy ...pity it is beyond the comprehension of the Mayor and school committee...
