The mayor and the superintendent created this problem and now they're pretending it doesn't exist.

Our savior, Dr. Durkin has all the answers to our problems. Thanks a lot mayor and school committee, you've turned nbhs into a war zone.

parents and students are not going to be held accountable so let's fire all the teachers instead.

I understand that there will be a segment on the news tonight about the High School, I will not be tuning in because it has been blasted on every social media, newspaper, and the police records were made public...I have read, seen and heard it all. I just feel that why waste all this time on casting blame and putting it out there all the time, turn this negativity into something positive . As a parent with a student there like many others, it is frustrating to keep hearing about the bad at the high school and not the good it has to offer. and it is not only at the High School level either. So many things go unnoticed at all levels. If parents took the responsibility for their children we wouldn't have half this mess. I respect teachers(most of them) and praise the work and dedication they bring to their classrooms every day. This is my personal opinion.

Can't wait to hear bob Unger and Phil Paleologos spin this. Those two are part of the problem.

The most powerful thing I saw in the video=teachers trying to HELP students. I am amazed that they still care so much about these violent students. They deserve our thanks and support.

I'm glad I know where you stand, Joanne. I can sleep better now.

It's a shame that this issue isn't a Bob Unger, Jim Arruda vanity project.

Pia Durkin, Mayor Mitchell and the School Committee have allowed New Bedford Public Schools to become a disgrace!!! SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!!!

Why didn't Supt. Durkin want to be interviewed by ABC6?

Is she afraid the violence will come out?

Doesn't she care about the members of the faculty at NBHS?

What is her School Improvement Consultant at the high school doing to stop all this violence?

Gee, even the police officers are being assaulted?

Why all the silence from our School Committee?

Talk about the negativity for the high school and district let's begin with the Mayor and School Committee.

How many times has he stated that the school district could be taken over by the state?

When was the last time he showcased students from New Bedford High School for their achievements? NEVER

When the JROTC, students who worked on MAT ROV competition, and students who received national recognition for the Financial Literacy test, NOT ONE OF THESE STUDENTS RECEIVED PRAISE AT THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING FOR THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

The Mayor, School Committee, and Superintendent are a JOKE.

To Joanne's post, keeping your head in the sand and not watching the story on Channel 6's ABC news only demonstrates your ignorance towards the problems. A problem can not be solved until it is addressed. Are there many positives at the high school, YES. Does this Mayor and School Committee showcase these students at the School Committee meetings, NO. WHY?

The Mayor and School Committee members are doing nothing to promote the many positives at the high school as far as I am concerned.

Interesting news item.

The elephant wonders if anyone in the news business will be brave enough to admit that criminally incompetent parents are a serious problem in America.

Naaaah!

It must be the morally corrosive effect of violent video games.

Or perhaps the insidious influence of Marilyn Manson music.

Or it could be something suitably amorphous like the declining morality of society.

No wait...I've got it!...

It's those teachers and their union thugs.

Woo! Hoo! Fire all the teachers!!

Soylent Green is people!!!

The mayor, school committee and Pia Durkin should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES for what they have done to New Bedford Public Schools!

Joanne:

I heard you on WBSM yesterday. Boy, you are singing a different song these days. Now that Mayor Mitchell and Dr. Durkin actually take your calls, you are really sucking-up. You don't give a rats behind about anyone except your own selfish interests. What you are hearing about NBHS is REALITY. You, Pia, Jon, and Phil are delusional.

I agree with one of the previous post. Former Mayor Scott Lang ALWAYS showcased the students of the high school and students throughout the district at the School Committee meeting.

Pia Durkin doesn't care about New Bedford. She's here to make a name for herself and then after all the damage she created is done here, she'll be headed off somewhere else to ruin another school system. The Mayor and the School Committee have totally allowed this woman to bring New Bedford schools down. They are doing a disservice to New Bedford and its citizens. We have to STOP them!! This is our city too!!

The video clip was most disturbing,a blatant disregard for others and self.

I hope these students were sent to some kind of counseling session and their parents made them apologize for this kind of behavior at their age.

Where are the stats for the assaults this year and why did we not show them?
This was an opportunity to showcase to the public what we deal with on a daily basis.

Durkin is irresponsible for letting this violence happen at the high school! The mayor should be fired because he does nothing about the increased crime in this city-He is not doing his job!

I don't understand why the parents back the students and abstain from going to school all together? Get this on national news for God sakes. Publicly humiliate those responsible.

I tried to leave a "Thank you" to Channel 6,however they require so much personal information in order to do so that I decided not. Hopefully someone at Channel 6 will read this blog. THANK YOU!

Please simplify your contact us access page if possible.

Students and their parents need to be held fully accountable for their actions whether it is an assault on a teacher, student, or support staff.

I personally have witnessed Dr. Durkin almost being knocked over by students running in the halls. The elementary level is sadly experiencing the same behavior as the high school. There are no "real" consequences and they know it. I had a student once ask me if I was ok because I had tears in my eyes. I couldn't help it. They were caused by such frustration and anger at the awful behavior. If a kid doesn't sit in their chair for more than 15 seconds or won't stop talking, yelling out, being rude, etc. there is no way they will reach proficiency in any school subject. It's all about the data right?

It's easier for Pia to deny, deny, deny than tell the truth and come up with a plan to change things. She's is such a joke. A very expensive one at that.

As the teachers are scapegoated at the high school and then almost 50% are terminated we will await the negatve effects the turnaround plan will have.
