Mayor Jon Mitchell told Phil Paleologos that he's concerned about the abc 6 news report on the violence at the high school. He feels that it will generate negative publicity.

This is coming from the guy who created negative publicity to oust Francis from her position as superintendent.

I recall that he gave speech after speach about the "failing" school system. I guess that's not negative publicity if it's coming out of his mouth.

One might consider the firings at the high school negative publicity.

The standard times, Phil Paleologos, Mitchell, and Durkin tried to cover up the assaults at nbhs. Kudos to channel 6 for exposing the truth

Jon actually said that assaults at the high school are down this year.

I'll wait until after the piece airs until I determine what sort of publicity it will generate. It could just as easily make the ENTIRE staff look bad, which would not do our cause any good. But it is February and ABC 6 needs to get their sweeps numbers up so let the sensationalized stories begin.

Ignoring a problem doesn't fix it.

Saw the exposure on "Stop the Violence" portraying the fights at NBHS on the Channel 6 News. Let's hope they dig up everything that's been swept under the rug since September, and it is taken to a new level. . . . . National News perhaps!?

Re. the above post "making the ENTIRE staff look bad"? Are you serious? The only ones who look bad are the ones who have denied the violence. . . . .and we know who they are! Teachers have put their lives on the line and have ended up with permanent physical damage as a result of trying to separate these idiots from fighting who come to school to cause trouble instead of trying to get a free education at my taxpayer's expense, by the way,. . . . . .not to mention a free breakfast and lunch to boot!

Celebrate the good--but don't hide the bad! I think parents are able to understand when a news story is sensationalized and when it deserves consideration. This story won't be the reason they take their top kids and run.

I guess Mayor Mitchell doesn't like losing control of the media. He's always had the Standard Times in his pocket, along with Bob Unger, Steve Urbon, and good 'ol Phil Paleologos. Well, maybe some real journalists are willing to tell the truth (even if a little sensationalized), and let everyone know what really takes place not only at NBHS, but at the middle schools as well. Night after night I've watched news stories on area schools that are a lot less "newsworthy" than this, but yet this information is aired. For years I've sat back and witnessed violence, weapons, and drugs happen in the school I work in and nothing is reported. It's about time!

Jon Mitchell will go down in history as the man who destroyed New Bedford schools.

Dana Mohler-Faria should be ashamed of himself for sticking us with Pia Durkin. I've lost all respect for that man.

The mayor should be more concerned about the violence itself....rather than the interview. I am sure the newspaper will have a lot to say about the news report...and I am quite sure that it will not be positive!

I am also deeply disappointed in the BSU President and his selection co. friends. They all should be questioned about the "fit" and history of their choice. You can't put children first if you put teachers last. We needed an advocate for public schools NOT a person that implements every soul crushing reform idea. Everything we experience impacts our students. EVERYTHING!

When you point the finger (Lou St. John) there are 3 that point back at you. Take some responsibility for ignoring what has been going on for years.

Once again the Mayor lied on Phil's show "Midweek with the Mayor" when he (Mayor Mitchell) stated that ABC did not interview Pia Durkin. I watched the news and Pia gave a statement to the reporter for ABC 6 which was on the screen along with her picture.

It seems like our so called Education Mayor makes up stories to suit his own agenda. Can't trust or take with a grain of salt what Mayor Mitchell says.

Read in today's paper about the break-in at the Honey Dew Donut Shop in the North End. Where is our "going to be Tough on Crime" Mayor?

Anonymous said...

There definitely is not enough rigor in keeping the crime down in New Bedford. I think the Mayor needs to look at the data more closely

From now on when there is violence in my school or kids bring knives and nothing is done about it I'm calling news outlets to call for an investigation. I'm done being a witness to this and told to keep it quiet.

The elementary schools have their share of disruptive students and fights that go unpunished. It's rampant in this school system. Our hands have been tied for years.

Teachers have been hurt doing their jobs, are the mayor and dr. Durkin going to make sure their taken care of and their injuries...

I hope they at least sent some flowers to the injured.

The more I read about these two,the more I think the are uncaring individuals.

What saddens me the most is that students' needs continually go unmet. Kids diagnosed with ASD then put into integrated classrooms without the support they need to be successful because the system claims it does not have the money to hire staff. The irony is that the administration continuously ignores these children and uses the money to hire highly paid administrators to the tune of over $100,000. The education mayor, superintendent of schools and school committee should explain their recent expenditures to the parents of students like this. I cannot fathom how money takes precedence over people and wonder how government officials and administration actually sleep at night. I am embarrassed and ashamed for my school system!

New Bedford Public Schools is a mess and only getting worse! We have an "education" mayor and "school" committee who don't come into the schools. How can this be? Shouldn't this be an obvious requirement? Personally I think that they are afraid to actually see what is going on as they avoid the issue or make up excuses to visit. More administrators are being hired with six figure salaries, and I'm struggling to teach large classes of mixed students ranging from Advanced Placement to low-level learners without a classroom aide and no textbooks! This is a no-win situation for everyone involved. The State believes the smart kids "will help" the low level students, and the low level students will admire the "smart ones" to the point of wanting to be "just like them." If you believe this fairy tale ending, you might also believe that pigs fly, and there aren't any fights at the high school!

Jon Mitchell is such a buffoon and such a joke!
