If I'm not fired, then why don't I have a job after June 30? I don't understand how Mr. Rosa can support the fair? How can you support a part of the process that is replacing your colleagues and fellow union members? Dr. Durkin is a master politician who has manipulated the truth to suit her when ever she needs to look better in the media. Many of the teacher's who retired or resigned had to do so. Most of us had no intent on leaving New Bedford for quite a while. Unfortunately, many of those folks who attended yesterday's fair properly don't know what the heck is happening in our district. The news of our plight has not reached that far beyond our immediate area. I wonder how many would've shown up if they did know the truth.
The Elephant once spoke to a coworker who couldn't help but laugh when she found out that she'd been "deselected." Apparently there were no layoffs involved there either.
Carol Kozma's attempt to make city residents worry about a minority teacher crisis is ill conceived. She is obviously a neophyte in an issue that has been studied statewide and nationally for two decades. This is why she relies on cheap stereotypes about students: they have ethnic peculiarities and are pining to interact with racially similar teachers - a claim grounded in typecasting and only ever supported by anecdotes ( indeed, the Times gets its anecdote eventually, going all the way to Fall River to get a student quote that backs up the broad claim).
Carol is new. But over 15 years, we have also had the sense of crisis pushed by one school committee member, and two successive Assistants to the Superintendent, all of whom used the sense of crisis to get hired/elected, but who have done nothing to resolve the issue, if indeed a resolution or issue even exists. Today, another school committee is quoted as saying that we need to do something between now and June - two months. Interesting: an man elected as a champion of minority interests and a student advocate has not actually been working on a plan in the four years he has been on the committee. No, we have two months.
For now, just reflect on the following section of the Kozma article:
"She [Gimbel of Bridgewater State University] said every year she receives emails from the admissions office at Bridgewater asking whether she knows of any minority candidates looking for positions to teach.
"I don't know why we cannot get more," she said"
No. No you don't. But that doesn't stop the rhetoric and preaching from universities and journalists. Neither will it stop the school committee dusting off their book of crisis quotes.
Meanwhile, it looks like 30% of our students will suffer because, according to these experts, certain ethnicities can only function in their own milieu and are incapable of standing on their own ability.
Pia must have gone to the same semantics class as Gwyneth Paltrow. We are not having layoffs, we are having a conscious uncoupling of teachers and students.
The ethnicity of the teacher has nothing to do with the success of the students. It's the quality and character of the teacher that counts, not the color of their skin. The students want to be treated like they matter and their feelings matter. They want someone who believes in them and their abilities. The teacher's ethnic background isn't what makes the difference. No matter what the teacher's ethnic background is, if you're not in their corner, kids can sense it and you won't be able to reach them and their learning potential. Ask any kid in NBPS and I'm sure they'll agree. Check out two movies with this theme.....Dangerous Minds and The Ron Clark Story
Here is the irony. School closings and the creation of charter schools have sharply reduced the percentage of Black teachers in Chicago and Newark, so I find it ironic to see them use this argument in New Bedford. The percentage of black teachers in Chicago has gone down from 40 percent in the mid 90's to 18 percent today. -Dr. Mark Naison
Now, let me count the ways, the Mayor, Durkin, and SC are spending tax payers money! Too many chiefs and not enough resources for teachers...other than CC materials and programs. More than education is going to fail in this city!!!
Shame on the current NBPS Teachers that showed up at this "job fair". Now it appears that this Stuporintendent might be getting her way in breaking the Teachers apart. Should have had a much stronger stand with this tyrant months ago...now the ship has sailed.
Karma has a way of working things out. These Teachers that showed up at this "job fair" knowing the heartache and terror that this Superintendent has caused..knowing the lives that have been destroyed...they should be ashamed of themselves.
I agree that it was disgusting that some of the teachers were actually recruiting at the fair, but I think most of them are forever fearful of the "higher-ups". Does anyone think that the reason Pia said "there were no layoffs" is because she does not want to pay unemployment benefits??
As for our lovely MAYOR he does absolutely nothing for the city, half of his depts are horrid, and if u ask him something he says will see what we can do that's his answer,he does NOTHING, please people wake up don't vote for him next year.

No layoffs... Lol... WTF Pia
The room looks empty.
Durkin is a very convincing liar.
What could be more challenging than working for people that have no respect for their employees?

Have to say it...Roosevelt had a minority principal and went from a New England Spotlight School to a level 3 ( soon to be 4)
Warning to the folks at soon to be Level 4 Normandin and Roosevelt:
YOU"RE NEXT!
^It's not going to stop there! Keith is also a Level 3. Elementary Level 3 schools beware...you're next.
