I am a parent and I wouldn't let my children go to school in New Bedford on Tuesday! The roads in NB are horrible and very dangerous! Teachers are people too, if it icy and treacherous , why in the hell should they go to school? Durkin and the mayor should have canceled school. Dumb...
Why would you not defend us? How about letting the public know about the teaching positions that are still unfilled since the beginning of the year? How about at Christmas break Durkin and Emsly limited us to only 10 subs available at the high school? How about the fact that on a good day when everyone is in, we still have to cover 20 classes a day because admin refuses to hire anyone?
I think the administration should step into the classroom and cover the classes if they don't want to allow for enough substitutes or hire new teachers to fill the empty positions. How does administration expect you to reach children if they don't even have teachers for some of their classes. It does not give them the feeling that the school system cares and it makes it harder on the teachers that are there trying to teach.
Two things come to mind after reading this story about NBHS and the shortage of substitutes to cover classes on Tuesday. 1. Why are any classes EVER left without supervision? Wouldn't it make more sense for all of these students to be sent to a central location, the auditorium maybe, and be supervised by one of the many administrators in the building? This is just a disaster waiting to happen-then when a huge incident occurs-who will be blamed? (The absent teachers of course! How dare a sick teacher use a sick day! It is flu season.) 2. Where are all of the NBHS parents? Shame on them for complaining on NB Guide instead of calling the Superintendent's office, the School Committee or even the Standard Times or WBSM. Nothing will change in New Bedford until parents GET INVOLVED!!
This is what the Standard Times thought was an important article to write? Really, I thought you guys were journalists. Dig people, dig. There are more important stories going on in the district that need to be published. Hey how about the fact that ELL students didn't get home from school until 7 or 8 last night. The bus driver was swearing, yelling, and refusing to drop the kids off at their houses. Parents called the police looking for someone to help and they said they couldn't do anything. The students were crying, asking to go to the bathroom, hungry. The response?....shut up, I don't care, wonderful isn't it? How about the fact that the same buses did not show up to pick up these children on Tuesday. Why you ask? Good question. We don't know. Maybe the streets aren't plowed as well as the Mayor likes to say. More days out of school for these students. Parents wake up and start attending school committee meetings to have your voices heard. Teachers have been trying to be heard but we are not listened too. The standard times doesn't even want to hear our side. The PR boy that was hired is making 60,000+ a year. A first year teacher doesn't even make that much. What does he do? He makes sure that the paper portrays the admin in a wonderful angelic light. In other words, he joined the dark side and is turning a blind eye to the needs of children. Where did that money come from to pay him? There are schools out there that need paraprofessionals and the district thinks its better to hire a PR boy. I say boy because he is all of 24 years old. This district is imploding people, open your eyes!!!! Parents, its not going to fix itself.
First of all it was each individual housemaster to make sure all classes were covered,then relate that information to headmaster. Then a plan should have been formulated to cover those students,time to use common sense,don't you think.
Actually school should have been cancelled,what will they due if a system wide blue flu happens.
Actually all teachers are entitled to their sick leave time,they have earned that time,especially considering the abuse they have to put up with.
Can you believe downtowns not blaming the administration on this but we're more than willing to throw Joanne under the bus last year for the chair incident.
We no longer have "housemasters". We now have a principal of the "upper school". 11- 12th grade and a principal of the "lower school" 9 - 10th grade. They are from the outside world and both were fired from their previous positions. You are right though. If classes weren't covered why didn't they know and do something about it. I know I covered classes on Tuesday and Wednesday where teachers were absent with no subs. No prep period at all.
no one can make this up. Why didn't mr. delfalco man up and help out with the unsupervised classrooms? Mr. ceo of education. Too busy making a video? hire paras??? The ells are not getting the support they need. Level one ells should get two and a half hours of support services a day. They don't get that in a week. Some weeks they get zero zero minutes of support. God Bless the children of nbps and the teachers . Amen

Some shady stuff going on with that Jonathan Carvalho. This story was "updated" (facts changed) to make it sound better for this administration.
Rumor has it that two more principals have not had their contracts renewed???
