I do agree that all our children deserve a solid education but when you divide resources to so many schools, everyone suffers. Our tax money only goes so far and pooling the resources is the most viable option. The children that he speaks of that live in the suburbs wanting to go to college, it is because their parents instilled that dream in them. I believe all children can become successful and not all parents see that dream for their children. That is where caring teachers step forward and show them the way. We need to focus on building a strong system. City on a Hill and the various other proposal schools are not the way. Anyone check in with the innovation school lately? There class sizes are up because they realized with enrollment comes money. So much for smaller classes eh? They are floundering already.
Mr. Stevens, you just lost a Gifts to Give donor and volunteer.
Your organization is not helping the public schools and this lack of support will hurt our children much more than you sending them some Barbie dolls on the holidays. I will still continue to donate to charities that support our public school children. I will also continue to provide additional resources for my own students.

Philanthropists are not educational experts. This is something that has become obvious. If they truly want to help, talk to REAL public school teachers in your community. Especially before you submit a letter to the local paper.
I'll tell you what the last thing a poor child wants is some old hand me downs...do you have any idea how this effects self esteem...
